Abstract:
The present world has a quickly developing population with a wide scope of interest from different
aspects of the world. People who needs to buy various items supermarkets need loads of time and
tolerance in organizing among themselves for shopping. Most of the supermarkets now days,
experiences queues on the billing counter on weekends or during peak hours. These queues result in the
loss of time for the customers and they feel irritation during this process. The goal of this article is to
give details about the introduction, usage and the design of modern smart shopping cart which reduces
the time wastage for the customers during the billing process. This article describes the smart shopping
cart in which customer can input the maximum amount he is willing to spend in the system of shopping
cart. The RFID reader reads the RFID tag on the item and displays its price on the LCD. If any unwanted
product is removed its price automatically gets deleted from the system.
Introduction:
In the modern world, large shopping stores and supermarkets experiences huge crowd on their
counters while customers perform transactions. The purpose of smart shopping cart is to reduce this
crowd and ultimately to save the time of shopkeepers and the customers. This Cart has product
identification device which is made up of PIC microcontroller, RFID reader, the LCD display and the Wi-Fi
module. RFID carries the information of prices of the items and it reads the information through the
code printed on the items while LCD displays its price. During the shopping the details of the product
bought is transferred to main systems of supermarkets through Wi-Fi device. It also helps customers in
economical shopping as the people exceeds their maximum budget while shopping in big supermarkets,
the red light imputed on the circuit of smart cart starts blinking as the amount of items exceeds the
maximum amount input and when the amount of items is less than maximum amount green light blinks.
Literature Survey:
[1], [2] aimed at providing knowledge about RFID reader, LCD switches, Motion detector sensor and
Push buttons. The customer push the start button when he/she begins the shopping. The RFID reader
reads the tag and give its price on LCD display when the product is placed in the smart cart. If the
customer removes any unwanted item from the cart its code is detected and it gets automatically
removed from the list. When the customer ends the shopping, the shopping counter with the least
crowd is detected and displayed on the LCD and the final bill of the customer is transferred to that
counter.
[3], [4] aimed to explain the automation and time saving system for the customers. The cart is capable of
generating the bill of the items customer bought itself. The customer pays through debit card and the
record is saved in the main data base system of the supermarket. The data of the customers can be used
by the supermarkets to send promotional messages to the customers.
The smart shopping cart is designed using the equipment listed above. The customer pushes the start
button when he/she begins the shopping and inputs the maximum amount they are willing to spend.
RFID reader automatically scans the items as the customer puts it into the cart using RFID tags on the
items and the price of the items starts adding on the display which shows the total amount. If the
amount is in range than green light will blink but if the amount of the items exceeds then the allowable
budget the red light will blink. When the customer presses the end button the total bill is send to the
server of the supermarket by using Wi-Fi module mounted on the circuit of the smart cart and server
send these details to the counter with the least crowd. The design of the circuit of smart cart and
computer server of the supermarket is shown below in the figures respectively
Results and Conclusion:
The smart shopping cart is remarkable invention in the era of modern world. It reduces the
customers cost and time and enables the owner of supermarket to reduce the labor cost. Sometimes
customers forget something important to buy while shopping, this problem can also be eliminated by
feeding the shopping list into the system of smart cart.
