Competitive Landscape Shifts: The Influence of Strategic Entrepreneurship on Shifts in
Market Commonality

1. Summary
In this journey, it has a extended research which is about strategic entrepreneurship
construct by theory-based model. Because firm was engaged to recognize entrepreneurial
opportunities which outside of its business by radical competitive actions. Though this
radical competitive action, firms can increase their market commonality with rivals with
dissimilar resources or decrease their market commonality with other rivals who has
similar resource.

2. Phenomena/ problems
In order to sustain competitive advantage, firm engages to use competitive action for their
strategy in the dynamic market. So “entering a new market” is one of good choice. In the
most condition, the phenomena of firms will based on advantage seeking or opportunity-
seeking behavior for their strategic entrepreneurship to decrease market commonality.

3. Key theory/ concepts


a) Market commonality
Market commonality is the “degree of presence that a rivals who is also another
important player in the same market”
b) Four distinct dimensions of strategic entrepreneurship
i. A growth-oriented perspective
ii. Entrepreneurial culture and entrepreneurial leader-ship practices.
iii. Strategic management and orchestrating ability about its resources and
capabilities
iv. Integrate the entrepreneurial mindset, entrepreneurial culture and leadership,
and use its resource to creative innovation
4. Data and method
In this journal, there is not data analysis process. But they developed a theory-based
model based on period researches which are Chen’s competitor analysis framework
analysis of hypercomputation . And also they identify key construct definition as figure.

5. Major contribution of study


One of the major contribution of this research is that it makes a clear theoretical definition
of competitive landscape shift. Although there are some recognition about shifts which
are blurring industry boundaries in the prior research. At the same time, researches use
Chen’s competitor analysis framework and market commonality dimension to define that
nonrival firms become direct rivals by market overlap. And researcher decide similarity
resource is also important condition which is also affect on shifting.

6. Limitation
From my perspective, the limitation of this research is that there is no specific data
analysis or quantitative study to support new research conclusion and concept in this
paper. About solving method, I suggest that maybe future researcher can choose a group
of company which are in the one industry. Using specific information and data from this
series company group to have competitive analysis and make use whether it can be
adopted into this research idea and conclusion or not.

7. Reason for choosing


My major research orientation in the SESAMI is strategic management and competitive
analysis. So I choose this paper which is about competitive landscape shifts when
establish new business for new area in a company in order to have strong competition
with other rivals in the concept of market commonality . And I think it is a new vision for
my understand in this area so finally I choose this article to read.
