RADSOC 2020/21 COMMITTEE CANDIDATES

Role of Secretary

1. Olivia Cullen
I would be absolutely delighted to be part of the Radiology Society committee next year. After
my placement in Radiology this year I have become really interested in the specialty. I would like
to put myself forward for PR officer or secretary (primarily PR officer if you haven’t already
selected someone). I am organised and reliable, two qualities which I think are absolutely key for
these roles. I am a team player and would enjoy working alongside other members. I have taken
part in group meetings such as the SSCC committee. I keep up to date on social media and would
be willing to run the Instagram page and Facebook pages, keeping everyone up to date on what’s
happening in the society. I am hoping to do my elective locally spending time in the radiology
department of the Ulster hospital, hopefully I’ll be able to make connections with members of
staff who can come and take part or speak at our events.

2. Ashwitha Karnati
According to me, leadership is not defined by the position title. It’s about having a positive
influence, enabling collaborative effort between members and working towards a shared vision.
The secretary’s position is a perfect combination of leadership, organization and involvement,
and I hope to use and develop these skills for the benefit of the students. I’m well-organized and
have an attention for detail, which I believe will translate well to maintain accurate records of
discussions during meetings. ‘Communication is key to collaboration’. Thus, for the upcoming
academic year 2020-2021, I hope to increase the effectiveness of the communication zone,
between the students and the board committee, to ensure everyone is well informed. As a
student myself, I believe that students want more opportunities to advance their skills and
intellect, and we should improve the quality of events, whilst focusing on educational benefits.
This will help create a better student populace, who will grow up to be functioning members of
society. I sincerely believe that I can bring a completely new perspective to the role, while
challenging the old ways of doing things.

3. Shalimar Baldemor
I believe I have the skills and experience required to take on the secretary role. For t he past year,
I have been the secretary for the Asian Medical Student's Association (AMSA) society. This has
given me experience in keeping track of various administrative tasks; corresponding via emails,
taking minutes, booking rooms for social and academic events and overall ensuring that the
society runs smoothly behind the scenes. Besides developing good communication skills from all
those role playing scenarios in medicine, I am quite a meticulous and self-disciplined person who
can be assertive when it comes to dealing with challenging tasks. I like to think that I am
organised and flexible, which is vital in this role, especially after balancing placements, AMSA
duties and my part time job last year. I love socialising with people and working towards a
common goal. I was previously an event organiser during my undergraduate degree and
therefore have experience liaising with people and working under a time limit. I have always
heard great things from this society and would love to discover more on how it runs especially
after gaining interest in radiology during my clinical attachments. I fully believe my previous
experiences as a secretary and eagerness to learn will allow me to adequately support the
committee members in your society.

Role of Treasurer
1. Daniel Rafferty
In my first year of Queen’s I am the first year representative of the Radiology Society, helping to
plan events and inform my year on future talks. I feel that from my experience in the society I will
be able to adapt to the role of treasurer. From my 2 years of work experience in my local hospice
shop, I feel that I am reliable and trustworthy when working with money. When in charge of the
shop, I was responsible for the daily earnings as well as ensuring that the correct sum of money
was paid by the customer and that they received the right change. From this, I have been able to
develop my skills in money handling and communication, which are key to the role of Treasurer,
who needs to frequently visit the Students Union finance office.

2. Ariana Axiaq
During the course, I developed a passion for interpreting X ray and I would really like to become a
radiologist in the future. This year, I have been a secretary for the Association of Medical
Students Ireland (AMSI-QUB). I was also involved in an entrepreneurship programme with SU
enterprise called Innovateher and before coming to QUB, I used to be a treasurer for a science
society (S-cubed) in my home country. I also have an Accounting background and I believe that
my bookkeeping skills will be beneficial for the smooth running of the society. For me becoming a
treasurer will not solely be about managing the monetary aspect of the society but also helping
out in organising events and becoming a more active student within the medical community.

3. Alex Hunter
I have previous experience as treasurer for the scout group I run, managing accounts and keeping
track of money. I am hoping to intercalate next year and will have more time to commit to
meetings and RadSoc events. I will also be around the mbc so will be able to get to the SU finance
office.
Public Relations Officer

I believe that I am suitable for these roles because I am very organised and detail oriented. I
always set appropriate times to work on academics and other aspects of my life, including being
a first year student rep and my participation in other societies. My experience as a first year
course rep made me well acquainted with most of my cohort. I was able to enhance my online
reach and my communication on social media, as well as in person. I believe all of these skills will
help me carry out the role efficiently so that we have a successful and enjoyable year ahead.

3. Kelsey Livingstone
Not sure how long to make this so I'll keep it short :) I have a huge interest and passion for
radiology and am currently very interested in pursuing it as a specialty. I know a lot of people
struggle with interpreting radiographic images or just don't enjoy the subject and so I would
really love to be a part of facilitating learning of this subject and help people to enjoy it more. I
also really enjoy using social media and how it's a great way of reaching out to people. I think I
would be a great fit for this role in the RadSoc as I would be able to try get more engagement on
the different social media platforms that RadSoc uses like instagram and facebook and could also
come up with creative new ways of helping people learn a bit of quick radiology while scrolling
through their pages. I know RadSoc only has 10posts on the insta page at the moment so I would
aim at making posts with a more regular pattern so that people might be more interested in
following the account and feel like they're getting helpful content from it too. Finally, I used
social media to run my own little (very little) business before starting med school to fundraise for
a trip I went on so I have great experience with using different features of facebook/instagram
and communicating with different enquiries, as well as making posts etc. to advertise products,
or in RadSoc's case, events. So hopefully my big passion for radiology and experience/enjoyment
of social media will make me a great candidate for a role in the society and I can help make it an
even better society than it already it. Thanks :)
2nd Year Rep
1. Taranveer Khangura
I am looking to hold more responsibilities as I progress to 2nd Year and this role would provide
me with such an opportunity. This year, I was a 1st Year Representative for friends of MSF so I
understand the different elements of the role of a representative. I am happy to give out
lecture/group chat shout outs about events and help out at the different events. I am a friendly
and confident individual which I hope will help me to motivate my peers to attend the different
events being held by the society. Personally, I am excited and interested in getting to learn more
about radiology and its importance in medicine, something I believe is not heavily stressed in 1st
and 2nd Year. Having had a conversation with my neighbour, an orthopaedic surgeon, this value
of early exposure was highlighted further.

3. Niki Sotiropoulou
I am very interested in radiology and I am thinking of specializing in radiology in the future. I
would love the opportunity to share this passion with the rest of my year group and keep them
updated on the events planned next year and help out in organizing events. I have had a lot of
experience organizing events, as a volunteer for the National Citizen Service (NCS) for three
years. I was responsible for organizing various fundraising events, including a walk on Cuilcagh
mountain in order to raise awareness for the importance of mental health with great turnout and
success! I also organized fundraising for my gold Duke of Edinburgh award. I’m also very active on
all types of social media platforms so I will be able to advertise the events of the society
regularly, and I will use my artistic abilities to create various flyers and posters.

4. Ana Catinca Ciuculete

I am a very talkative, energetic and proactive student, trying to give my best in all the activities I
am performing and not settling for anything but what’s the highest standard or expectation. I am
a highly sociable person, therefore, I believe the role of a second year rep for the Radiology
Society would be suitable for me, as it would be a real pleasure for me to encourage and inspire
my colleagues to attend the society’s events, share them on all my social media accounts and
also learn my course mates’ feedback on the society as a whole, its events and membership.
Moreover, while in high school, I was involved in a lot of activities which required organization,
advertising, persuasion and social-interaction skills, one of the most memorable of them being
the European Youth Parliament (EYP), where I was in charge of organising informative sessions in
high schools to promote the project and convince students to attend and also popularise it
among their teachers and parents, similar tasks to those of a rep. Not once was I contacted by
people who, through word of mouth, social network or information-board advertising, were
willing to join our events. I think this past experience of mine can be of real help in my work for
the Radiology Society. I myself have become interested in radiology after the first couple of
lectures and practicals which contained details about what radiologists actually do, how
radiology has revolutionised the medical world in the past few decades and how many
therapeutic interventions cannot go on without the help of radiology. I will never forget how
amazed I was during the thoracic radiology practical when learning how many things could be
seen, understood and diagnosed from one single radiograph. My wish is that as many students as
possible will be able to understand that radiology is far from being just about looking at white
bones on a dark background and I believe that my role as a second-year rep for the Radiology
Society would really facilitate this. I think that my enthusiasm about radiology as a science and a
medical profession, my persuasion skills and my love for social interaction and socialisation will
benefit my activity as a second year rep for the society.

3rd Year Rep

1. Gary Murphy
I am a Radiography graduate, and still currently work as a locum radiographer. I believe that my
experience working in this area would help to provide practical and helpful tips in many aspects
of radiology, including image acquisition, image interpretation and radiation safety. As this is a
specialty that I am interested in pursuing in the future, I would be also very keen to organise talks
and events to help learn more about the speciality for both myself and others.
