Unit aim

Through a process of research, dialogue, reflection and evaluation, you are required to
identify and prepare for specific Higher Education or employment progression routes
appropriate to your ambitions. The unit will give you the opportunity to explore aspects of
business, entrepreneurship and marketing and enable you to demonstrate the requisite
practical, intellectual and communication skills necessary for progression.

This unit is designed to develop your understanding of the range of educational and career
opportunities within creative media production. The unit is to encourage the development of
a range of effective communication and presentation skills appropriate to an identified
progression route.

This unit is to enable you to understand progression opportunities within Higher Education, but
also provide a range of opportunities for you to explore apprenticeships, internships,
employment routes and opportunities to take you abroad in the media sector.

Throughout this unit you will look at

• university options
• applying to UCAS
• finding internships
• how to prepare for interviews
• creating portfolios and a social media presence
LO1: Understand progression routes and related application processes

1.1: Critically evaluate own strengths and ambitions to support own


development and meet identified goals.

1.2: Use knowledge and understanding of progression routes to make applications within
creative media production higher education or related employment.

University v internships

You will need to explore the difference between university and internships and discuss what
option is best for you.

Via a variety of small tasks, you will learn the pros and cons of both routes.

Task 1: University

What skills / traits do you have that would make you a good university student?

Task 2: Pro and cons of university

What do you feel the pros and cons of going to


university are? Create a list for both of these
considering as many factors as possible.

Task 3: UCAS

Create a UCAS account.

Find 7 courses on the UCAS website that you


would like to apply for

• Logo at top
• Name of university
• Address and contact details
• Open day dates – sign up for these dates
• Course they wish to apply for (name of lecturer
to head the course)
• Info on course
• UCAS points required
• Is it an interview process / portfolio?
• Cost for each year
• Accommodation details
Task 4: Internships

Look at how to break into the media industry – read the article on Vibe and
analyse – discuss if you are suited to this or not (personality and skills)

1. What are internships


2. Upload the advert
3. Who is it with and what will you be doing
4. Why do you think you would be suitable for these roles?
5. How much do you get paid (if it states this but look for general pay scales for
interns)?
6. Would it be worth it – cost / travel etc…

Task 5: Internships abroad (voluntary experience)

Find at least 2 internships that you can travel with

Task 6: Student finance

Research how University is funded and what is available to students.

Task 7: Travel and work

There are many opportunities that allow you to travel and work. You can see the world and
still earn money.

Options include: starting your own travel blog, working as a freelance for other travel
companies, create travel videos for tourist companies.

• Look into countries you could travel to and still earn money in the industry
• What skills would you need to have to do this?
LO2: Understand communication, skills and knowledge for progression routes

2.1: Critically evaluate a range of communication skills and knowledge


required to make application to progression routes within creative media
production.

2.2: Use a range of communication skills and knowledge to support own progression goals.

Task 1:

Look at communication skills need for interviews. How should you conduct yourself, what
should you take, what should you wear? You must research how to prepare for interview –
weather for university or internship

Task 2:

Selling yourself and creating portfolios


The next LO requires you to make your portfolio and social media sites for internship
interviews or University interviews - BOTH will expect you to have all of these

TASK:
Analyse at least TWO portfolio sites by looking at the following:
• Design – how creative are they? You are looking to be a media professional, so it
should reflect this
• Front page – about them / biography / what they’re offering
• Contents – what pages do they have and what content is on them
• How videos are displayed?
• What do you like and what sections inspire you?
LO3: Be able to use promotion and presentation skills and knowledge to make
applications for future study or work

3.1 Use knowledge and understanding of promotion and presentation skills to


support own development and meet identified goals

UCAS
Tutor sessions next year will involve you writing your personal statements,
applying to UCAS, attending open days and university talks.

LO1

For every open day you attend you must write up notes and how you feel about the
university / course next to your work on LO1

LO2

1. Your personal statement must be uploaded to LO2


2. Any information you find on finance must be uploaded to LO2

LO3

You must keep your portfolios and social media sited up to date and add everything you
complete for university to your sites
