1. Summarize the purpose of acceptance criteria for adhesive anchors

2. Identify factors in an evaluation service report to be used in design calculations

3. Understand the effect of design parameters on bond stress

4. Implement design software and specification verbiage to help ensure adhesive

anchor designs are model code-compliant

This course is approved for1 PDH of NCSEA Diamond Reviewed Accreditation.

Certificates will be distributed to individual participants upon completion and passing of quiz.

ACI REQUIRES ADHESIVE ANCHOR SPECIFICATIONS

INCLUDE DESIGN PARAMETERS
ACI requires that parameters
associated with bond stress
be specified:
 Concrete temperature range
 Moisture condition of concrete
at time of installation
 Acceptable hole drilling
methods and required hole
cleaning procedures

EVALUATION TESTING RESULTS IN DESIGN FACTORS THAT

QUANTIFY ANCHOR’S RELIABILITY
ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria AC 308 uses
reference tests to establish bond strength of an
adhesive and reliability tests to determine their
sensitivity to installation and load conditions.
• Reference tests establish bond strength values for
prescribed drilling and cleaning methods, dry
concrete, etc.
• Reliability tests are conducted in range of sub-
optimal conditions to determine an adhesive anchor
system’s resilience

ADHESIVE ANCHORS HAVE TO PERFORM WHETHER THE

JOBSITE IS WET OR DRY
The presence of water during installation of
adhesive anchors can affect the adhesive’s bond
with the concrete surface, reducing load values.
• High reliability or lower sensitivity results in a higher
ɸ-factor for tension loads
• Lower reliability or higher sensitivity results in a
lower ɸ-factor for tension loads
• Moisture condition can vary between dry, water-
saturated, water-filled, and submerged concrete

ANCHORS HAVE TO PERFORM WHETHER THE JOBSITE IS

HOT OR COLD
There are four elements of temperature that
come into effect when we consider its effect
on an adhesive’s applicability:
• A wide range of base material temperatures at time
of installation for different climates and seasons
• Long enough work time to set the anchor properly
• Fast enough cure time to keep the project moving
along
• Conditioning of the adhesive that may be required
at certain installation temperatures

DESIGN EXAMPLE: DETERMINE LOAD ADJUSTMENT

FACTORS
• Determine load reduction factors
based on geometric constraints

Tension load adjustment:

spacing = 10”  𝑓 = 0.78
edge distance = 6”  𝑓 = 0.75

Shear load adjustment:

spacing = 10”  𝑓 = 0.61
edge distance = 6” away from edge
 𝑓 = 0.52

Concrete thickness adjustment:

thickness = 8”  𝑓 = 0.60

Design is satisfied: Ndes > Nua Design is NOT satisfied: Vdes < Vua

If tension and shear capacity had independently met respective demand, interaction check to follow.

SPECIFYING BASIS-OF-DESIGN PARAMETERS IN GENERAL

NOTES IS REQUIRED BY MODEL CODE
ACI requires that parameters
associated with bond stress
be specified:
 Concrete temperature range
 Moisture condition of concrete
at time of installation
 Acceptable hole drilling
methods and required hole
cleaning procedures

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completing this program, the participant should be able to:

Certificates will be distributed to participants upon passing and completion of quiz.
