Aeneas
Virgil was an influential Roman
writer who lived from 70-19 8.c. During
the last ten years of his life, he worked
on the Aeneid, an epic poem about a man
named Aeneas.
Who Is Aeneas?
‘Aeneas is a character in Homer's liad,
whom Virgil borrowed for his own work.
In the Aeneid, Aeneas’s mother was the
Greek goddess Aphrodite. His father was
a mortal man named Anchises. Aeneas
believed in duty and honor more than his
own pleasure or happiness. According to
Virgil, he was the father of Roman cul-
ture, and his ancestors founded the city
of Rome.
‘eneas’s Voyage
‘As the story begins, Aeneas is a hero
of the Trojan War. He flees from Troy to
Italy, but his ships are blown off course.
He ends up in Carthage. Once there,
‘Aeneas falls in love with Carthage's
Queen Dido. He stays in Carthage until
the god Hermes orders him to continue
his journey. Dido is heartbroken and kills
herself with Aeneas’s sword.
