Health Informatics

The article, Defining the Basics of Health Informatics for HIM Professionals defines

health informatics as “a field of information science concerned with the management of all

aspects of health data and information through the application of computers and computer

technology.” The environment that we live in today is very technology affiliated. Healthcare is

continuing to become more advanced with each technological advancement. These

advancements offer viable tools and methods in addressing medical needs. Due to the expansion

of technology within healthcare, there has been an information overload. Based on my

understanding, the objective of health informatics is to obtain a collection of data and analyze

that information for the benefit of public health. It is the integration of “healthcare sciences,

computer science, information science, and cognitive science to assist in the management of

healthcare information” (Sweeny, 2017). What is influential about health informatics is it

approaches healthcare information holistically. The accumulation of data is available to health

professionals that know how to properly analyze information, which can then be applicable to

whatever concern needs to be addressed in the healthcare industry. The application of

informatics in public health is to improve health outcomes.
