Task A4 | D

 esign brief
🔎 What?

❗Why?

Develop a design brief, which  You have to make a decision at this point in the project: What will you design and create,
presents the analysis of relevant  for whom and why. You want your decision to be based on sufficient background
research.  research.

⚙ How?
Research results summary
● Present the main results of your research (from A2) in a concise list of bullet points. This must be in your own words!
● Illustrate your take-aways with imagery wherever you feel this reduces the amount of writing needed. However, don’t
add images for the sake of adding images. Cite any images that you use.
● Cite (in-text) from the sources that you found your answers from. Use the proper MLA format.

DEFINITIONS  By consulting sources, I have found out:

Fabric is a piece of cloth or other materials made by weaving together cotton, nylon, wool,
silk or other materials. Fabric could be used for sheets, curtains and cloth.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Textile is a type of fabric that is woven together through different techniques like weaving,
braiding, knitting……
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sewing pattern is a diagram or graph you need to make before sewing to make sure the
measurements are correct and you have all the different parts.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Garment is a general term for clothes, it could be used when you are speaking of a wide
range of clothes.

MANUFACTURING  By consulting sources about manufacturing cotton, I have found out:

Cotton Textiles are made through two processes: spinning process and weaving process.
In the spinning process, firstly, the raw cotton is cleaned, deseeded and the dust and
short fibers are removed. Secondly, the cotton fibers are passed through various machines
to be combed and are finally supun to form soft yarn ready to be weaved and knitted.
Lastly, the cotton is dyed into different colours and ready to be made into garments.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The basic joining and assembly methods to attach different pieces of fabric together are:
sewing (running stitch, cross stitch, back stitch) , fusing (mostly used to join interlinings),
adhesive……….

TECHNIQUES AND  By consulting sources such as, I have found out the following information that I can use for
TOOLS FOR MAKING  designing and creating my product:
How to draw a sewing pattern:
First, get a piece of paper that is larger than your garment and fold it in half. Then, fold
your garment in half and pin it onto the piece of paper. Secondly, use a pencil to trace
around your folded garment. Thirdly, draw a seam allowance around the figure you have
drawn. Lastly, do the same thing for other sections of your garment.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some tools and materials I have available for making my product are:
● Thread (polyester and cotton and waxed)
● Eyelets
● Studs
● Rivets
● Snap fasteners
● Velcro (sew-on and stick on)
● Anything you request that is approved by the teacher.
● Fabric glue
● Contact adhesive (Elmer’s multi-purpose spray adhesive)
● Sewing machine (Brother JA1450NT)
● Needles
● Seam ripper
● Fabric shears
● Rotary cutter
● Hole punch
● Rivet/eyelet setter and die

CLIENT INFORMATION  By consulting sources such as, I have realized the following considerations should be
taken into account when designing and creating my product:
I am designing for myself.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I represent teenagers and middle school students.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The aesthetics factors that needed to be taken into account is :
-Simple and minimalism
-contrasting colours
- portable size so it is easy to carry around.
-animals (panda, cats, dogs)
-food (avocados, sushi, pizza)
-clothing (vans, nike, converse, denim products, zara….)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The material properties that needed to be taken into account is:
-Cotton
-Soft
-Does not hold its shape
-wrinkles easily
-breathable
-absorbent
-lightweight

PRACTICAL SKILLS  By completing the practical skills tasks, I have learned the following skills (list & explain):
Braiding
Braiding 3 cloth stripes into one single strand.

Sewing
Sewing includes running stitch, backstitch, cross stitch.

Sewing a Button
Sewing a typical button on a piece of fabric

Finishing Knot
Tying a finishing knot after you had finished sewing so your thread wouldn’t be loose and
be undone

The skills that will be useful for my project are (list & explain why):
Thread A Needle
Threading a needle is important and useful for my project because you can’t sew with just
the thread, and if you can’t even thread the needle, then any sewing techniques will be
useless.

Sewing
This will be useful for my project because I need to sew all the different parts of my zipper
pouch together, and it would require different sewing techniques because one type of
stitch might not be suitable for all the parts.

Finishing Knot
This will be useful for my project because if I didn’t tie a finishing knot at the end of
stitches, then all the thread will become undone and I will have to restart from the
beginning.

Braiding
This will be useful for my project because I could add a braid as a decoration for my zipper
pouch, so my pouch will not be so plain and boring

The skills that I still need to practice or want to learn more about are (list & explain):
Snap Fastener
I still want to learn more about how to sew a snap fastener because even though I’m
sewing a zipper pouch, a snap fastener might still be useful for next time when I’m sewing
something else.

Button
I still need more practice on how to sew a button because I think it will be fairly useful for
other things and everyday life, and lastly, I could also use it as a decoration for my zipper
pouch.

Zipper
Since my product is going to be a zipper pouch, learning how to sew a zipper would be
the most important because otherwise it would not close and all the stuff inside will fall
out and it would just be a pouch.

Decorations
I would like to learn how to sew on decoration if possible because since the colour of my
shirt is white, it would be really plain if I don’t put on any decorations, so this would make
my zipper pouch more interesting.

Appendix A

Project commitment
● State what type of product you are going to develop in your project in this unit and outline the direct practical purpose
of this product.
● Outline the bigger picture purpose of the product.
● Describe the client or target audience for whom you will develop the product.

Product and Purpose   In this project, I will create a zipper pouch that is eco-friendly. This product is practical
because firstly, we could use it as a pencil case, secondly, we could put things like earbuds
and lip balm in it so our bag won’t be so messy and thirdly, since it won’t take up too much
space, it will be easy to carry around.

The purpose of my product is to try and put our effort into making our earth a cleaner
place to live, and try to protect our environment and try our best in solving the problem of
textiles being quickly sent to landfills.

Design Goal  My product will address the design problem of -textiles being quickly sent to landfills- by
upcycling an old cotton T-shirt that otherwise would be thrown away and making it into a
new product and is practical in everyday life and reusable.

Intended   My product is intended to be used by myself and my family members, and since the target
Target audience  audience is them, my zipper pouch will not need to be fancy, the more practical, the better.

Target audience representative  I would describe my client as a teenager who likes the current style, loves animals and
who likes simple design.

Their needs and wants for the product are simple, light weighted, and the design should
be able to fit all the things that will be put into it.
