ISO 45001: 2018(12th March) vs ISO 18001:2007 (1999 until 12th March 2021)

Similarities:

1. Motive: Framework for managing the prevention of employee injuries, illness, fatalities.
2. Plan-Do-Check-Act is the fundamental operating principle in both standards.
3. Policy requirements, awareness requirements, resources needed to support the systems
monitoring, measuring and analyzing the performance.

Differences:

1. Annex SL HSL high level structure is added like all other core modern ISO standards.
2. Previously the operation of OH&S management was delegated by senior management
representative but in new system senior management representative strongly discouraged
and single employee should be recognized about risk [worker involvement].
3. Risk vs Hazard: ISO 18001 focused on controlling hazards & ISO 45001 concentrated
on ‘risk based thinking’ which is more proactive, flexible & preventive.chapter:6.1
4. ISO 45001 include an expanded section on responding to emergency situations.
5. Improved Planning: ISO 45001 are more formalized to reach organizational goals,
linking them to H&S objectives, setting priorities & establishing documents.
6. A new definition of ‘health’: Previously health & safety is purely physical terms. But in
ISO 45001, mental wellbeing is also a concern. [Clause 4.2; 6.1.2.1; 6.2; 8.1.2; ]
Clause 6.2: Mental health risks can be integrated into your H&S improvement objectives
& plans and tracked as a KPI through mechanisms like annual reviews and satisfaction
surveys.
7. Terminology update: ‘Documents and records’ is now ‘documented information’.

Power plant (public limited company): Own challenges than other industry. Organizations
using OHSAS 18001:2007 can do the following:

1. Identify organizational gaps as per requirements of ISO 45001.

2. Develop an implementation plan.
3. Appropriate training and awareness. Also focus the impacts for organizations.
4. Update existing OHS standard for revised requirements and provide verification of
effectiveness.
5. Liaise with certification body for transition arrangements.
Bureau Veritas: 18000 is used now as radio frequencies so that’s no more use of it.
So transitioning is required. 40-45% is same as Annex SL basic requirements and
some new additional requirements
