PLATE 4

7. What is triangulation in land surveying? Explain in your own understanding.

For me triangulation is used in surveying to measure the usually long distances. This is
because there can be a lot of inaccuracy in laying out long distances. We cannot possibly lay out
precise long distances but we can lay out accurate angle between two points. The method of
triangulation in land surveying is getting a reference distance between two point A and B and
setting up point C, measure the angle of point C and A and compute the distance AC. The
computed distance of line AC get be the next reference distance of the next triangle.

8. What concept of triangulation is applied with the GPS? Attach images to aid your explanation
The concept of triangulation that is used in GPS is the concept of pin pointing a specific
point using three satellites. For example, we want to know the location of a certain point, we take
its bearing from satellite A and also take its bearing form satellite B and C, and draw a line
adjacent to its bearing, and the point where all of the lines intersect is the position of the point.

9. What is trilateration in land surveying? Explain in your own understanding.
The trilateration in land surveying is measuring the distance of a side of a triangle,
usually using a electronic equipment, and from this distance the angles of the triangle are
computed. And by having a chain of triangles beside each other, the surveyors can now get the
distance and angles of a certain points or areas that usually are impossible to measure. And it is
sometimes compared to triangulation.
