Question 2

A storm is approaching a sailing ship. The main mast of the ship is already secured with two cables that
exert the forces on the mast (FA = 8 750 N [East] and FB = 8 750 N [South]). The winds will exert
22 500 N [West 15.0° North] upon the ship. The ship’s captain has only one spare cable, which she
must use to balance the other forces on the mast making the sum of the forces equal to zero.
Fwind = 22 500 N [West 15.0° North]

FA = 8 750 N [East]

mast

FB = 8 750 N [South]

What force must be applied to the mast so that the sum of the forces is equal to zero?
Question 3

Water is leaving a hose at 6.8 m/s. If the target is 2 m away horizontally, what angle should the water
leave the hose at? ***Requires the use of the double angle formula: sin (2A) = 2 sin(A) cos(A)

(yes, this was given previously as part of the Kinematics 5 - Oblique Projectile - worksheet)

SOLUTIONS
Question 1

Find areas between graph lines and x-axis; disregard signs since it is a distance problem.

A) I -20 I + 15 = 35 m C) I -37.5 I + 2.5 = 40 m

B) 32.5 + I -5 I = 37.5 m D) 37.5 m

Question 2 (solution by component method)

x-component y-component
FA = 8 750 N =0N

FB =0N = -8 750 N
– 22 500 x cos 15 + 22 500 x sin 15
FWIND = -21 733.3 N = 5 823.4 N
– 22 500 x sin 75 + 22 500 x cos 75
Resultant = -12983.3 N = -2926.6 N
of FA, FB and FWIND

Required Force = +12983.3 N = +2926.6 N

magnitude: !(12983.3)! + (2926.6)! = 13309.06 direction angle: tan-1 (2926.6/12983.3) = 12.7o

Required Force : 13 309.1 N [E 13o N] or [N 77o E]

Question 3

a! t #
Equation for vertical displacement as a function of time d! (t) = d"! + v"! t +
2
gt #
Ground-to-ground projectile motion: dfy = 0 doy = 0 ay = g 0 = 0 + v" sin θ t −
2
Since the problem neither provides nor requires time, we will gt #
isolate the “t” term v" sin θ t =
2
2v" sin θ
Solve for t; reject t = 0 (when the water exits the hose) t = 0, t =
g
a$ t #
Equation for horizontal displacement as a function of time d$ (t) = d"% + v"% t +
2

Ground-to-ground projectile motion: dox = 0 ax = 0 2 = 0 + v" cos θ t

#&! '() * 2v" sin θ

Substitute t = 2 = v" cos θ 5 6
+ g
Note the presence of 2 sin(q) cos(q); this is an identity 2 v" # sin θ cos θ
2=7 8
2 sin(q) cos(q) = sin(2q) g
Substitute This is the range formula; if you are v" # sin 2θ
using it you can start from here
2=7 8
2 sin(q) cos(q) = sin(2q) g
1 2g
Isolate q, substitute known values θ = :sin,- 5 # 6;
2 v"

Solve for q θ = 12.55.
