Term 3 Review Assignment

Use the following lens formulas

(yes, they are exactly the same as the curved mirror formulas)

1 1 1 hi di
= + M= =−
f d o di ho do

Sign conventions for the lens formulas

(yes, they are exactly the same as the curved mirror sign conventions)

Distances:
real image => positive di virtual image => negative di

Heights and Magnification:

upright (virtual image) => positive hi inverted (real image) => negative hi

Focal Lengths:
converging (convex) lens => positive f diverging (concave) lens => negative f

Solve the following problems - show your work

(solve them exactly the same way as curved mirror problems are solved)

1. An illuminated object is located 5 cm from a converging lens that has a

focal length of 15 cm. What is the distance between the lens and the image?
2. A manufacturer of multimedia projectors wants to produce images 3 m in height on a screen
that is placed 10 m from the lens of the projector. The height of the object is 60 mm.
Calculate the focal length of the required lens.

3. A 3 cm high vase is placed 10 cm in front of a diverging lens. The focal point is 6 cm away
from the lens. Find the height of the image of the vase.
4. The converging lens of a multimedia projector has a focal length of 20 cm. This lens is
located 8.2 m from a vertical screen. An object is transmitted to the projector and the lens is
adjusted to produce a clear image on the screen. What is the distance between the
screen and the object?

5. An insect is magnified four times using a magnifying glass (convex lens) with a focal length
of 15 cm. At what distance from the magnifying glass is the upright image of the
insect formed?
6. An object 5 cm tall is placed in front of a converging lens that has a focal length of 25 cm.
The real image formed by this lens is 10 cm tall. How far from the lens is the object
placed?

7. An object placed 12 cm from a lens produces a virtual image that is 3 times

larger than the object. What is the focal length of this lens?

BONUS MEGA EXTRA CREDIT QUESTION

A cannonball is fired at a
castle. The cannon is
located on a 30 m high cliff
directly facing the castle.
The cannonball is fired with
an initial velocity of 60 m/s
at an angle of 75 to the
horizontal and positioned
at a distance of 175 m along
the ground from the castle.
A window is 25 m above
the ground. Will the
cannonball go through the
window?
