Rocks and Sand Mini Experiment

Science

Problem: if two containers are filled to the same height, which is heavier, garden pebbles or wet
sand?

Information: the sand is wet, which I think is going to change the results.

Hypothesis: I think that the container with the pebbles is heavier.

Experiment steps:

• get out two identical containers

• measure the weight of one of the containers and write down the number (the other
container should be the same weight)
• take one of the containers and fill it with pebbles
• do the same with the other container but fill it with sand
• measure the weight of both the containers
• Subtract the weight of the containers from the weight of the sand and pebbles
• Then you’ve got your answer!

Results: it turned out to be that the pebbles and wet sand were the same weight! (zoom-in to see
the pictures better)

*measured in kilograms*
Conclusion: it turned out to be that the wet sand and the pebbles have the same weight consistency.
But I do notice that if the sand were dry then my hypothesis might have been correct. This
experiment is important to learn because if garden companies (such as, home depot, Seeds Now,
Lowes and/or more) want to ship pebbles or rocks to a garden, it might be helpful to know which
one is heavier.
