Running an animal shelter wasn’t all about fun and games. Although some may think so, but operating
one still required thorough planning, preparation and know-how. Most importantly, it also relied on the
support of its community.

One woman found herself managing a struggling animal shelter called Los Adoptables in Mexico. Pris
Austin started with the shelter in a chaotic mess, but everything was soon sorted out with the help of
kind-hearted volunteers. With the shelter currently housing 45 dogs and 9 cats, it needed support more
than ever.

Like most shelters, Los Adoptables depended on donations to sustain the needs of the animals it took
care of. Some made use of their creativity in enticing people to donate and help the shelter. For Austin,
this was a constant challenge but she refused to back down.

Last year, her efforts in getting more dog food donations paid off. With her birthday fast approaching,
she asked her friends to give her bags of dog food as gifts. That’s when her idea for a dog food throne
came about.

Austin began enlisting the help of everyone in their community to help her create the special throne by
donating sacks of dog food. She posted a picture of her on top of a single bag of dog food, just to start
the ball rolling. Soon, their shelter was flooded with donations, mostly from animal-loving expats living
in their area.

The Dog Food Throne project was a success, gathering a total of 41 bags along with a few extras.
Everyone was thrilled at the result, which motivated Austin all the more. She decided to make this
project into an annual event, wherein she’ll ask for the same thing on her birthday this year.

Although hard times still plagued them, Austin was determined to keep her shelter running as smooth as
possible. The work may seem daunting to most people, but she knew that to see her dogs find their
forever homes was more than she could ever ask for.
