Research Log #1 - Solutionary Project 2020

Date:  3/7/20
Name:   Konnor Harada
Essential Question:   What effects does getting bullied caused mentally?

Three Points to Prove: #1:  Being bullied can cause low self-esteem.
#2: Being bullied can lower school performance.
#3: Long term risk can be deadly.

Point that this Source Proves:   # 2

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

“While the victims showed a high level of depressive symptoms in adulthood”

“Students who were rated as the most bullied performed significantly worse academically than
their peers.”

“Without intervention, kids are at risk for Increased risk of suicidal thoughts, suicide plans, and
suicide attempts, Self-destructive behavior, including self-harm, and Substance abuse.”

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):
A group of scientist in Norway made an investigation on the long-term psychological
effects of adolescents. What they found was that the people were studied suffered from severe
depression “While the victims showed a high level of depressive symptoms in adulthood, both
groups experienced an increased risk of psychiatric hospitalization due to mental health
disorders.” This is very interesting because long term effects of bullying apply to the victim and
the bully.
It no secret that bullying can make anyone feel down, but if someone is being repeatedly
bullied this can lead to a lower performance in school. According to A UCLA study of 2,300
students in eleven middle schools in Los Angeles. They found that students that experienced
high level of bullying was directly associated with lower grades across three years of middle
school. “Students who were rated as the most bullied performed significantly worse
academically than their peers.”
If nothing to done to prevent someone of being bullied, people at risk serious risk.
“Without intervention, kids are at risk for Increased risk of suicidal thoughts, suicide plans, and
suicide attempts, Self-destructive behavior, including self-harm, and substance abuse.” This is
why it’s important to stop bullying as quickly and easily as possible to that kids won’t go down
the path of drugs of self-harm.
