Que 1. 0.2 kg/s of moist air at 45◦ C (DBT) and 10 percent RH is mixed
with 0.3 kg/s of moist air at 25◦ C and a humidity ratio of 0.018 kgw/kgda
in an adiabatic mixing chamber. After mixing, the mixed air is heated to a
final temperature of 40◦ C using a heater. Find the temperature and rela-
tive humidity of air after mixing. Find the heat transfer rate in the heater
and relative humidity of air at the exit of heater. Assume the barometric
pressure to be 1 atm.

Ans. Stream 1: Mass flow rate, m1 = 0.2 kg/s, T = 45◦ C and RH =

10 percent.
Using psychrometric equations or psychrometric chart, the humidity ratio
and enthalpy of stream 1 are found to be with the help of grap:
W1 = 0.006 kgw/kgda , h1 = 61.0 kJ/kgda.
By conventional formula
h = 1.005T + W (2501 + 1.88T )
which gives 60.7386 KJ/Kg. Which is approximately equal to 61 KJ/Kg
which is found by the graph.
From here i am taking data by the graph

Stream 2: mass flow rate, m2 = 0.3 kg/s; T = 25◦ C and W = 0.018

kgw/kgda.
Using psychrometric equations or psychrometric chart, enthalpy of stream
2 is found to be:
h2 = 71.0 kJ/kgda.

For the adiabatic mixing process, from mass balance:

m3 W3 = m1 W1 + m2 W2

so
m1 W1 + m2 W2
W3 =
m3
where m3 = m1 + m2 so,
0.2 ∗ 0.006 + 0.3 ∗ 0.018
= 0.0132
0.2 + 0.3
From energy balance assuming the specific heat of moist air to remain con-
stant:
m3 T3 = m1 T1 + m2 T2
so
m1 T1 + m2 T2
T3 =
m3
where m3 = m1 + m2 so,
0.2 ∗ 45 + 0.3 ∗ 25
= 33
0.2 + 0.3
so W3 =0.0132 kgw/kgda and T3 = 33◦ C and by chart RH3 = 41.8 percent.

For the sensible heating process in the heater:

Qs = m3 (he − hi ) = m3 cpm (Te − T3 )

since cpm = cp + W cpw

cpm = humid specific heat, kJ/kg.K
cp = specific heat of dry air, kJ/kg.K
cpw = specific heat of water vapor, kJ/kg
W = humidity ratio, kg of water vapor/kg of dry air

Since the second term in the above equation (w.cpw ) is very small com-
pared to the first term, for all practical purposes, the humid specific heat of
moist air, cpm can be taken as 1.0216 kJ/kg dry air.

0.5 ∗ 1.0216(40 − 33) = 3.5756 kW

I am not doing other questions because they are theoretical and it would
look like copy paste in this.
