Self-Assessment: Preschool Teaching Practices

Be concise in answering the statements/questions in each box. The NAEYC criteria for National Accreditation is the basis of this
self-assessment to demonstrate alignment with the Standards and to familiarize students with this national accreditation process.

Describe how your curriculum plans reflect an emphasis on play-based learning.

They emphasize play base learning because each learning plan is an activity for the child to develop
different skills and developments to the brain for kids. Plus, hands on experiences help with other skills
and developments of the body.

Describe how you support ample time for child-directed play and child choice of play materials.

How I support ample time and child choice of play materials is to use large or small group time when
deciding on activities to do with children. For children to have their own choices I would make sure to
have a wide variety of different toys, games and tools when doing many different types of activities
and learning plans.

Give examples of how you join children in learning centers during play/work time to extend and
deepen children’s learning and model play and prosocial skills.

I join children during any learning center time with varieties of activities for the kids to learn and
explore. I would ask them questions or answer theirs, also to encourage them if confused or frustrated.
I would also join in on a fun game the child made up and pretend to be what they need me to be as they
act out a scene from their head. If they want others to play, I also encourage them to ask other children
if they want to play. Having a positive attitude really helps the child be confident too.

Give examples of situations when you supported children’s social play skills by helping them enter in
to, sustain, and enhance play with peers.

I usually try to demonstrate how to socialize with others by using coworkers or another child to show
how to correctly talk t others and when you want to ask others to play. I will encourage them to do it
themselves and what to do when told the other does not want to play. How to be nice and helpful to
others when playing and speaking as well.

Give examples of how you lead varied opportunities to help children learn physical games with rules
and structure, stimulate a variety of skills, enhance sensory-motor integration and development of
controlled movement (balance, strength, coordination. How is the YoungStar criteria for 15 minutes of
teacher-led activities met?
Different activities that I have led are read aloud, arts and crafts, and movement activities outside. I
have helped kids to develop their fine motor skills and hand to eye coordination.

Self-Assessment: Preschool Teaching Practices
Give examples of how you support varied opportunities for children to develop a sense of competence
and positive attitudes toward learning, such as persistence, engagement, curiosity, and mastery.

I would always tell a child that if they have trouble with something that frustrates them to have a
positive attitude about it because it takes practice to succeed at different activities and skills. I would
encourage them to talk and accept anybody that wants to play or is alone to gain friends and
confidence.

Give examples of how you plan varied opportunities for children to develop communication and
vocabulary by responding to questions, communicating needs, thoughts, and experiences, describing
things and events, conversations, and experiences such as field trips.

Opportunities that I make for children to develop communication and vocabulary are a bunch of
writing activities and practices as well as spelling games. Also to respond to help parents and kids be
prepared when there are activities and trips that are coming up.

Give examples of how you support the development and maintenance of the child’s home language
whenever possible. Do you try to learn familiar words, terms, or phrases in child’s language? Are
there opportunities for children to see other languages in print?

I would have many books and posters of children with different races and languages to show many
types of kids around the world and to teach children to respect and learn about other cultures. I would
always try to learn different popular language phrases and help the child who speaks a different
language. I would also have worksheets for the child to use for help when struggling.

Give examples of how you model functional use of writing and help children to discuss the many
ways writing is used in daily life. Do you give children daily opportunities to write or dictate their
ideas? Do you give children assistance in writing the words and messages they are trying to
communicate? Do you support various types of writing, including scribbling, letter-like marks, and
developmental spelling?
I would have children do journals and writing practices in class and have writing books to help with
writing letters of the alphabet. There would be lots of assistance from me and other teachers when the
child is having trouble writing and assist with communication to help them understand. I support any
type of writing or drawing from any child because it means good development in the brain as they get
older.

How often and when do you read books children? Give examples of how you engage in
conversations that help children understand the content of the book.
I would read to children every other day in group time and during holidays or fun days such as Dr
Seuss. I would let kids have the option during free time or naptime to read with friend during that time
or by themselves during naptime. I would make sure that all the books are age appropriate and the
children are able to read it easily.

are conducive to the quiet enjoyment of books. Describe how children have access to a variety of
book types, including storybooks, factual books, books with rhymes, alphabet books, and wordless
books.
I would have books of all genres and fun stories to keep children interested and enjoy reading. There
are calming corners and a couch for the children to sit and enjoy reading comfortably. Their will be
many types of writing as well for the children to read and learn different types of writing.

Give examples of how you can support opportunities for children to become familiar with print and
connect it to spoken words by making print accessible throughout the classroom. Are items
belonging to a child are labeled with his or her name? Are materials labeled? Do you have print
posters to describe some rules and routines?
Have worksheets and books with big words to make it easier for children to be able to read. Teaching
kids about vowels. Each child will have their belongings and storage cubbies labeled in their own
names and can keeps their stuff safe.

Describe when and how you use rhymes, poems, songs, and finger plays. Give examples of how you
support multiple and varied opportunities to develop phonological awareness with children, including
syllables, word families, and phonemes, helping to identify letters and the sounds they represent, to
recognize and produce words that have the same beginning or ending sounds, and supporting children’s
self-initiated efforts to write letters that represent the sounds of words.
I would use those forms of entertainment during read aloud and for free of use during free time and
learning. I would have helpful videos and CD’s for the children to listen to help with syllables and
vowels. Also books to help with the alphabet and sounds.
Give examples of how you support varied opportunities for children to gain an appreciation of, and to
learn new concepts and vocabulary, and express themselves creatively in ways that reflect diversity
through art, music, drama, and dance activities.
I am always positive when it comes to new concepts and learning. I try to show children how fun and
interesting it can be when with others and that there are many types of ways to learn. I can show them
how to find hobbies and interests to make it more fun for each individual child to express themselves
and to be proud of accomplishments.
