DEPARTMENT OF PETROLEUM ENGINEERING
I hereby that the work is presented in this dissertation entitled “CRUDE OIL
TESTING OF KACHAMARI GAON” submitted to the CSIR-NEIST. Jorhat is
record of an original work done by me under the guidance of Dr. U.N. Gupta.
Scientist . Polymer, Petroleum and Coal Chemistry Group of Material Science
and Technology Division CSIR-NEIST.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The internship opportunity I had with CSIR-NEIST was a great chance for learning and
professional development. Therefore, I consider myself as a very lucky individual as I was
provided with an opportunity to be a part of it. I am also grateful for having a chance to meet so
many wonderful people and professionals who led me though this internship period.
Bearing in mind previous I am using this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude and special
thanks to the MD of CSIR-NEIST who in spite of being extraordinarily busy with his duties,
took time out to hear, guide and keep me on the correct path and allowing me to carry out my
project at their esteemed organization and extending during the training.
I express my deepest thanks to Dr. Jayaramudu Jarugala, Head Scientist, group leader of MSTD
and Dr. Upendra N. Gupta for taking part in useful decision & giving necessary advices and
guidance and arranged all facilities to make life easier. I choose this moment to acknowledge his
contribution gratefully.
It is my radiant sentiment to place on record my best regards, deepest sense of gratitude to Mr.
Ramesh Vohra, for his careful and precious guidance which were extremely valuable for my
study both theoretically and practically.
I perceive as this opportunity as a big milestone in my career development. I will strive to use
gained skills and knowledge in the best possible way, and I will continue to work on their
improvement, in order to attain desired career objectives. Hope to continue cooperation with all
of you in the future,
Sincerely,
Gyandeep Gogoi.

SEPARATION OF ASPHALT,WAX AND RESIN RESIN CONTENT FROM
CRUDE OIL RESIDUE
Weight of empty beaker=96.5112g
In this separation process asphalt , wax and resin content are separated from crude oil
residue.300ml of n-heptane is mixed with the crude oil residue and heated for 2 hrs. The resin and
wax content is soluble in n-heptane but the asphalt content is insoluble in n-heptane. The heated
mixture is cooled down in a dark place approximately for 2-3 hrs. Then with the help of a funnel and
a beaker the mixture is filtrated. As asphalt is insoluble in n-heptane, the asphalt content will stick
on the sides of the filter paper and the other part of the mixture, containing resin and wax are
extracted to the beaker. Then the asphalt containing filter paper is processed by Soxhlet method.
Now the asphalt-toluene solution is treated in fumehood chamber for 3-4 hrs. The tolune will be
vapourised and asphalt will be separated.
The n-heptane+resin+wax solution is taken in a conical flask and heated by a magnetic stirrer at a
temperature of 60°C. Also a magnetic bar is used to stire the given solution. The solution is stirred
by the magnetic stirrer with a speed of 380 RPM. Then after every 5 minutes one spatula of silical
gel is mixed . The resin part is absorbed by the silica gel. All the amount of silica gel is mixed with
the solution . After 2-3 hrs of the process the colour of the solution changes from dark brown to
yellow. Then the conical flask is removed from the magnetic stirrer. It is noticed that the silical gel
with the resin is settled down the flask. And the wax +n-heptane solution will be above the silica
gel+resin part. After this process the entire solution is filtrated by using a filter paper and one
another conical flask. Thus the wax+n-heptane part is extracted to the conical flask .One small part
of the silica gel+resin part will stick on the filter paper and the major part of the silica gel+resin will
be left in the previous conical flask.
