As a young man, George Washington's dream was to
go into the Royal Navy. When he was 15, he received a
position on a ship, but his mother pleaded with him not
to go. Heading his mother's wishes, George gave up
his dream of being a sailor and took a position as a
surveyor while tending to the needs of widowed
mother.

In the middle of his career, George's brother, Lawrence

had to go to Barbados to recover from illness and he
urged George to go with him. Although, it conflicted
with his own plans, George accompanied his brother,
falling ill with small fox while there.

his life when he was asked to lead the Continental
Army and afterwards, the United States. Although he
would have preferred a home life at Mt. Vernon, he
answered the call of duty and led the colonies to
