MINI PROJECT - SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN PERLIS: A CASE STUDY

Rimba Mas Sanitary Landfill is the only active landfill in Perlis, operational since April
2017.The site received 100 – 150 tons of waste daily consisting of domestic waste, inert
waste, bulk waste and garden waste. Currently the landfill is experiencing possible
contamination of soil, groundwater and surface water that occur from leachate
produced by water or liquid wastes.

As an Environmental Engineering consultant, you are awarded a project to design a

new effective waste cell and to recommend an alternative or upgrading of leachate
treatment plant to reduce treatment time at appropriate capital and operational
cost. The project requires your company to involve diverse groups of stakeholders in
order to obtain the waste generation and composition using knowledge of
engineering practice in waste management practice. Based on theory-based
formulation of environmental engineering fundamentals, the client, SWCORP requires
a submission of engineering technical report consisting of high level problem solutions
including various sub-component parts in waste management engineering design
including waste cell engineering drawing and alternative treatment that require
abstract thinking, originality in analysis to formulate suitable reduced treatment time.

Objectives:
1. To recommend a new municipal cell with design that is effective with
minimum cost
2. To recommend an alternative or upgrading the leachate treatment process to
reduce the treatment time.
3. To list the sustainability approach in the design
