Morning Worship Service Sheet Sunday 17th May 2020
Opening Prayer
Collect
Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: “People of Athens! I see
that in every way you are very religious. For as I walked around and looked carefully at
your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.
So, you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to
proclaim to you.
“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and
does not live in temples built by human hands. And he is not served by human hands,
as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and
everything else. From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the
whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of
their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and
find him, though he is not far from any one of us. ‘For in him we live and move and
have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’
“Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is
like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill. In the past God
overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.
For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has
appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”
Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you should suffer for
what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.” But in
your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone
who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness
and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against
your good behaviour in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. For it is better, if it is
God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. For Christ also suffered once for
sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the
body but made alive in the Spirit. After being made alive, he went and made
proclamation to the imprisoned spirits— to those who were disobedient long ago when
God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few
people, eight in all, were saved through water, and this water symbolizes baptism that
now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear
conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone
into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in
submission to him.
Chorus:
It's Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
we pour out our praise
It's Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise to You only
Bridge:
And all the earth will shout Your praise
Our hearts will cry these bones will sing
great are You, Lord
CCLI Song #6460220
2012 Integrity's Alleluia! Music
Jesus said: “If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will
give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The
world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know
him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come
to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I
live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in
me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who
loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them
and show myself to them.
Our Belief
Prayers
Creator God
You made each and every one of us in your image.
We pray for all those around the world affected
by the coronavirus
We pray for government officials in every country,
but particularly here in the UK
as we are seeking to find a practical and safe
way out of lockdown.
We pray for wisdom and discernment,
for care and compassion
at this time and in the coming months
Lord in your mercy
All: Hear our prayer
Holy Father
We pray for your churches here in Watton and Threxton
and for churches around the world,
as we look forward
in anticipation to coming together again in worship
and fellowship.
We pray that we may listen to you
over these coming weeks and months as we prepare
to return to our buildings.
We pray that we may bring with us the lessons learned over
these past months.
We give you thanks that we, as a community
have been able to stay connected.
We give you thanks for each other’s help and prayers.
We praise you for always being at our centre
and we worship you as a gathered community of faith
this day.
Help us to look forward prayerfully and positively.
Lord in your mercy
All: Hear our prayer
Living God
We pray for all those who are sick at this time
with something other than coronavirus,
For all those waiting for a diagnosis or for treatment.
We pray for the lonely,
For the bereaved
And all those who are caring for others.
We pray for all our keyworkers,
For all those returning to work,
For those who are not able to return,
For those whose future remains unclear.
We pray particularly today for 4 year-old Vinny, who is so bravely
going through treatment for Leukaemia
And who still has a smile and can look up at the world and say
“What a beautiful day, Mummy”
May he be our example as we look forward together.
In a moment of quiet we lift before you
All those who have asked for our prayers….
Merciful Father
All: Accept these prayers for the sake of your son
Our Saviour, Jesus Christ
Amen
