Red Velvet (Hangul: 레드벨벳) is a South Korean girl group formed by SM Entertainment.

Originally debuted as a quartet group on August 1, 2014, the group is now composed of five
members: Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, Joy, and Yeri, with the latter member joined the group since
March 2015. Regarded as one of the most popular K-pop groups worldwide
by Time and Billboard, Red Velvet has received several awards for their discography,
choreography and popularity, including the Golden Disc New Artist Award in 2015 and
the Mnet Asian Music Award for Best Female Group in 2017. The group was also hailed as a
major contributor and one of the country's most talented idol groups who have "largely
promoted K-pop", according to the director of the Korea Foundation for International Cultural
Exchange while discussing the Korean Wave in 2018.

Following their debut digital single "Happiness" in 2014, Red Velvet has since released two
studio albums, one reissue album, one compilation album and nine extended plays in Korean,
with eleven of them topping South Korea's Gaon Album Chart. The group then rose to fame
with "Ice Cream Cake" and consolidated both their mainstream and critics popularity with
further hit releases, such as "Dumb Dumb", "Russian Roulette", "Rookie", "Peek-a-Boo",
"Bad Boy" and "Psycho" which have all charted in the top five on Gaon Digital Chart, while
their singles "Red Flavor" and "Power Up" topped the chart upon its initial release.
Additionally, the group ventured into the Japanese music scene since July 2018 with the
extended play #Cookie Jar, and has since released another extended play while continuing
touring between South Korea and Japan. With the release of The ReVe Festival trilogy, they
became the first South Korean girl group to hit the top spot of the US iTunes Album Chart,
and subsequently the first girl group to achieve it three times in a singular calendar year.
Additionally, they won the Song of the Year Award at the Asia Artist Awards for "Umpah
Umpah" and Stage of the Year at the Soribada Best K-Music Awards in 2019.

Known for the group's unique dual sonic concept which stemmed from their own group name,
Red Velvet often combines both sides of their music to create "sensual, reminiscing,
colourful, and sophisticated" feels, which eventually reflects on the group's image as well.
The group, however, also focuses on each sonic concept with certain releases. The 'red' half of
the group's music is predominantly pop with experiment from other genres such as electronic,
while the 'velvet' half focuses primarily R&B with strong '90s influence and incorporates
elements from genres such as funk, hip-hop and jazz.
