Introduction

''The Beatles' book was wtitten by Paul Shipton. Paul Shipton (born 1963) is an award-
winning children's author.

He was born in Manchester and attended Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and

Manchester University. After completing two Masters' degrees (in Classics and Philosophy), he
taught English in Istanbul for a year. After returning to the UK, he taught English as a foreign
language for several years, and it was around this time that he published his first book, Zargon
Zoo (1991).

Four years later, he published Bug Muldoon and the Garden of Fear, and relocated with
his family to Wisconsin, United States, where he works as a freelance writer and editor. He also
writes books for younger readers under the pen name Paul Cooper1.

Paul Shipton grew up near Liverpool. He was only seven at the time of the Beatles’ last
album, but he has always listened to and loved the band. His favourite Beatles album is probably
Revo/ver. His favourite song is ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ or ‘A Day in the Life’.

How did four boys from Liverpool reach this position? What was so special about the
Beatles? And why did it all have to end? This book follows the story from their happy early days
in Liverpool until the sad end of the most famous group in the world2.

Body

This book tells the story of the greatest band in the world from the early days in
Liverpool to the Beatles' music in the world today.

The Beatles were a legendary rock group that formed in Liverpool, England, in 1960, and
went on to transform popular music as a creative, highly commercial art form over the next
decade. The Beatles were one of the most popular bands of all time, producing songs like
"Yesterday, "Hey Jude," "Penny Lane, "With A Little Help From My Friends," "Norwegian
Wood (This Bird Has Flown)," "Day Tripper" and "Come Together." Learn more about the "Fab
Four"—John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr—by exploring our
Beatles collection3.

Paul McCartney once said, ‘The Beatles were always a great little band - nothing more,
nothing less.’ Millions of fans around the world disagree with this. To them, the Beatles were a
‘great little band’ who changed modern music forever.

When the Beatles ended in 1970, people around the world couldn't believe it. John, Paul,
George and Ringo all followed their own interests successfully. But all four faced the same
question everywhere they went: ‘When will you play together again?’ The answer always
seemed the same — never — but fans could hope and dream.

Then, on 8 December 1980, the dream ended. John Lennon and Yoko Ono were returning
home to their building in New York. Mark Chapman was waiting in the shadows. He shouted to
John and then he shot the singer in the back and chest. John Lennon died in hospital that night.

The news was met with sadness all around the world. The Beatles could never play
together again.

The Beatles were an iconic rock group from Liverpool, England. They are frequently
cited as the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed band in modern history, with
innovative music, a cultural impact that helped define the 1960s and an enormous influence on
music that is still felt today. Currently, The Beatles are one of the two musical acts to sell more
than 1 billion records, with only Elvis Presley having been able to achieve the same feat.

The Beatles were comprised of four members in the long run: John Lennon (vocals,
rhythm guitar, piano), Paul McCartney (vocals, bass guitar, piano, guitar), George Harrison (lead
guitar, vocals), and Ringo Starr (percussion, vocals). Lennon and McCartney were the main
songwriters and singers, although songs penned by George started showing up more frequently
on later albums. Ringo traditionally sang one song on each record. George Martin produced most
of the Beatles’ records, and was a highly influential part of the band’s sound on most of their
records. He also played the renowned solo on “In My Life” (Rubber Soul). The Beatles showed
an amazing talent for writing hit after hit.

The Beatles are the best-selling band in history, with estimated sales of over 800 million
records worldwide. They are the best-selling music artists in the US, with certified sales of over
178 million units, and have had more number-one albums on the British charts, and have sold
more singles in the UK, than any other act8.
