COMBUSTION

GRADE 7 : LAYLA ROUMI.

OBJECTIVES:

1- DEFINE COMBUSTION.
2-DIFFERENCIATE BETWEEN COMPLETE AND INCOMPLETE COMBUSTION .
3- INDICATE THE REACTANTS OF COMBUSTION REACTION.
4 – INDICATE THE PRODUCTS OF COMBUSTION REACTION.
5-DEFINE IGNITION (KINDLING) TEMPERATURE.
1- DEFINITION :

• A combustion reaction is a
chemical transformation ,that
require a combustible and an
oxidizer (oxygen).
ACTIVITY 1 PAGE 116:

• Why the mass change at the end of experiment (figure 2c)?

Since the chemical transformations takes place in an open recipient.

Calculate the mass of oxygen gas

According to the law of conservation of matter,
Mass of reactants (steel wool +oxygen) = mass of products
So the mass of oxygen= 7g.
2- TYPES COMBUSTION REACTIONS .

2.1- COMPLETE COMBUSTION :

• Reactants : combustible , excess of oxygen
• coulor of flame: blue.

• products: carbon dioxide and water vapor.

2.2- INCOMPLETE:
COMBUSTION
• Reactants : combustible , insuffisciant
quantity of oxygen
• Color of flame: yellow .

• products: black deposit of carbon ,

carbon dioxide and water vapor.
3- IGNITION (KINDLING) TEMPERATURE.

• Is the minimum temperature at which substance

will catch fire to start burning. It varies from one
substance to another.

• EX III : • EX IV :

Remark: increasing order from

the smallest temperature to the
biggest temperature.
