Unit 6: Distance learning

1. What are your top three takeaways from John Green’s course, Navigating Digital
Information? Explain why each of these takeaways is important when conducting internet
research/using the internet to acquire information.
- Fact checking, I learned that you should find at least two other sources that are
independent of the original post. You should think twice about believing and
sharing the post if the other sources are quoting the original source. Finally,
check your biases. If you are conservative, moderate or liberal, don’t limit your
information to just those sources. This is very important because we live in a
world where fake news is spread easily.
- Lateral reading: Lateral reading helps the reader understand both the perspective from
which the site's analyses come and if the site has an editorial process or expert
reputation that would allow one to accept the truth of a site's facts. This is very
important especially when you are fact checking your information it is important to
look up different reliable websites that support the claim you are trying to check.
- Advertising in social media apps: I thought this was very important because as
teenagers sadly most of our lives revolve around social media. I personally never
thought much as to how all of the ads that came up as I scrolled through insta were
things I had recently looked up. After listening to John Green’s explanation as to why
this happens, I am a lot more observant of the information a release.

What are your top three takeaways from your time implementing the state’s social distancing
initiatives (learning from home)? Explain why this was an important idea to learn.
- I have learned how to take better care of myself mentally and physically. Mentally I
have set apart time at least once a day to listen to myself, whether it be to destress or
just separate myself from whatever is distracting me. Physically I have started to
workout a lot more, I think not being able to go out was made me come up with less
excuses to not work out.
- It has taught me who my true friends are. I began to realize that the people who reach
out and actually make an effort to talk to me, are the people who are really there for
me when life is not so messed up.
- It also has taught me how to manage my time better. When all of this first started, I
would go to sleep at around 4 in the morning and wake up and 3pm this was
obviously not a healthy sleep schedule. After a couple of weeks, I start to manage my
time in a more positive way, I would wake up early and have my online classes and as
soon as my classes were over, I would exercise. After exercising I would eat breakfast
and I feel that starting my day off like this made the days not feel as long and tiring.
