 England emerged from the collapse of the Roman Empire.


 Artistic culture flourished under the Anglo-Saxons, producing epic poems such as Beowulf and
improved metal working.
 Network of Christian monasteries and convents was built across England.
 It is notable here that Christianity established in England in 7 th Century.
 Norman invasion of England in 1066 introduced a feudal approach to govern England.
 Expansions of towns, cities and trades are remarkable.
 Conflict between the Anglo-Norman elite resulted in civil wars and the loss of Normandy.
 Great famine, Black Death, catastrophic events in fourteenth century killed around half of
England’s population.
 Social unrest resulted in peasant’s revolt in 1381.
 In 14th and 15th centuries English kings had long term conflict with France for claiming French
throne that resulted in “100 years war”.
 King Henry’s VII (7) victory in 1485 marks the end of Middle Ages in England and the start of the
early modern period.
 This middle age is divided into three sub-period;
1. Early Middle Ages (600 – 1066 AD)
2. High Middle Ages (1066 – 1272 AD)
3. Late Middle Ages (1272–1485 AD)
