Introduction
Fault-finding information for the complete transmitter can be found under Help in the data
on alarms and faults.
The information can be accessed in the log-book by clicking on the question mark to the left
of the relevant alarm or fault.
The information given is relatively abbreviated; more detailed information can be found in
the maintenance manual under the section devoted to Fault-Finding Sheets.
The alarm and fault system consists of loops which are connected to earth and fed by 24V
DC; a no-fault condition exists when the loop is short circuited. Generally speaking an LED
lights up under no-fault conditions and is extinguished when a fault exists (loop open-
circuited).
The faults are displayed as follows:
 Single-unit transmitter:
Alarm and fault conditions are displayed on the transmitter user interface or on a remote
monitor if installed.
 Multi-unit transmitter:
In the case of the amplifier unit, alarm and fault conditions are displayed on the amplifier
unit user interface and on the GESMUL monitor.
For the other units (Coupling system / Central control system .....), alarms and faults are
only displayed on the GESMUL monitor.

Description of Fault-Finding Sheets

Each Fault-Finding Sheet refers to an individual fault condition and consists of two double-
sided sheets.
The name and type of the fault is given on the top part of the first page. Type A refers to an
alarm, while type 1 and type 2 are used for faults as follows : 1 is used for a fault condition
of short duration which is inputted to the fault counter whereas 2 is used for a permanent
fault condition which can shut down the amplifier unit or the transmitter.
There then follows a reference table with cells numbered 1 to 12, each of which correspond
to a block in the continuity diagram on page 4 (blocks are also numbered 1 to 12); each cell
also gives:
- the relevant electrical block diagram number.
- layout and circuit references for the component shown in the diagram.
Reference numbers for the relevant Line-Up (REG) Sheets, Remove / Re-Insert Sheets
(DMR) and Repair Sheets (REP) are given where necessary.
Page 2 contains information on the types of fault and how to fix them: This information
is given in paragraphs on the right hand side. The paragraph headings on the left are the
same on every sheet and are as follows:
 Source of fault signal: this gives the point at which a protection loop has become
open circuited thereby triggering fault or alarm signals.
 Most probable cause: describes the component at which the loop should be short
circuited.
 Other possible causes: gives other reasons for the appearance of the open circuit
when the circuit is not open at the source point described above. These can include faulty
processing cards and bad connections.
 Other fault indications: this describes other fault indications in addition to
messages on the user interface screen and on the Control System monitor; in most cases,
the LED described in §1 above is extinguished when a fault causes the protection loop to
open.
 Equipment to be used: this gives information on the test equipment necessary in
the fault-finding operation.
Finally under the heading Procedure, a description of the procedure to clear the fault is
given.
Sheets 3 and 4 contain continuity diagrams which show the routing of the loop circuit
through the various equipment units up to the GESBUS card including the position of the
above mentioned LED.
As mentioned above, the blocks (numbered 1 to 12) representing each unit in the continuity
circuit correspond to the numbered cells in the reference table on sheet 1.
It can hence be seen how these sheets facilitate the tracing of the protection loop circuits
for the whole transmitter.
Sheets 001 to 099 deal with the central control system, sheets 100 to 199 deal with
400 kW blocks. Sheet 200 deals with amplifier modules.
A list of the Fault-Finding Sheets is given on the following page (§ 3).
A list of drawings to be used in fault-finding operations is given in § 4; the drawings are
contained in a separate set of documentation.
