Brief on the Guardrail and END Terminals considerations

For the proper performance of guardrails and end terminals, guardrails and end
terminals should be selected on the basis of the containment levels specific to the site.
They therefore should be crash tested for crashworthiness depending on the selected
containment level in accordance withEuropean EN 1317-4 or NHCRP 350 or MASH
(Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware).
There are six test levels (TL1 to TL6)according toNHCRP 35O or MASH. These test
levels are a function of the impact angle, speed and the vehicle mass.

General guidance on the choice test levels

Test level 1- is acceptable for some workzones and very low volume, low speed local
streets and highways (50Km/hr).
Test level 2- is acceptable for most local and collector roads and most workzones
(70Km/hr).
Test Level 3- is acceptable for a wide range of high-speed roadways(100Km/hr).
Test level 4-6- are applicable to highways with high volumes of truck traffic or to areas
where penetration has serious consequences.
According to EN 1317-4
N1 and N2 acceptable for most roads,
H1, H2 and H3 -high containment for roads with heavy truck use and high
speeds.
H-4a, H4b - very high containment for areas where penetration has serious
consequences.
