BASANT

The annual festival of kite flying is called “Basant”. On Basant day all and sundry go up their
house-roofs to fly kites. The whole sky is overcast with the colourful kites of different sizes.
Loud music is also enjoyed on roofs. Kite-looters are seen busy in catching stray kites on roads
at the risk of their lives. Holding feats is a necessary part of this festival. During the previous
years, the use of metal string and chemicals to harder the thread made this entertainment a
dangerous game. The sharp thread cut the throats of many innocent children and bike ridders. On
the other hand metal string caused a great loss to Wapda. Because of these factors kite-flying and
Basant have been banned in Pakistan.
