2. Verb + -ing or verb + to…
a. Some verbs are followed by –ing form of a verb.
E.g. stop, finish, admit, avoid, postpone, consider etc. are followed by -ing
- He stopped smoking. I finished doing my homework. The thief admitted stealing the phone.
b. Some verbs are followed by to + verb (infinitive).
E.g. decide, refuse, promise, forget, agree etc. are followed by another verb, the structure is usually
verb + to … (Infinitive)
- It was too late, so I decided to take a taxi. I promised not to be late. He refused to drink alcohol.
(NB: Unfortunately, there is no easy way to decide which verbs are followed by –ing and which are
followed by to… (infinitive). It is best to check in a good dictionary.)

Exercise 2
Complete the sentences with the correct form, -ing or to….
1. I don’t want …….. out tonight. I am too tired. (go)
2. Why do you keep ……. me questions? Can’t you leave me alone? (ask)
3. I have enjoyed …… you. (meet) I hope ……. you again soon. (see)
4. Don’t forget …….. your hands with soap thoroughly before you eat. (wash)

6. I’m not in a hurry. I don’t mind ……. . (wait)

8. The students agreed …… some money for the flood victims. (donate)

coronavirus pandemic. (stay)
