Scope
1. Scope
This method describes a procedure for determining the edgewise compressive strength, parallel to the flutes, of
a short column of single-, double-, or triple-wall corrugated fiberboard, in a neckdown, non reinforced, loading edge
configuration.
2. Significance
Research has shown that the edgewise compressive strength of specimens with flutes vertical in combination with
the flexural stiffness of the combined board relates to the top-to-bottom compressive strength of vertically fluted
corrugated fiberboard shipping containers (1,2). This method may be used for comparing the edgewise compressive
strength of different lots of similar combined boards or for comparing different material combinations (3,4). For
reference testing it is recommended that TAPPI T 811 “Edgewise Compression Strength of Corrugated Fiberboard,” be
used.
3. Apparatus
3.1 Compression testing machine1 (flexible beam or rigid support), having the following:
3 1.1 Flexible beam compression tester.
3.1.1.1 An upper and lower platen, one flexible beam supported and the other driven. The surfaces of the platens
are required to be smooth, flat, and to remain parallel to each other within one part in 2000 throughout the test. The
platens are required to have not more than 0.051 mm (0.002 in.) lateral relative movement.
3.1.1.2 A rate of force increase of 111 ± 22 N/s (25 ± 5 lbf/s) when the platens are in contact (5).
3.1.1.3 A capacity of at least 2224 N (500 lbf).
3.1.1.4 A means for measuring and indicating the applied load within 5 N (1 lbf).
3.1.1.5 An indicating mechanism that can be checked accurately with dead weight loads, load cell, or proving
ring. The accuracy required is 0.5% of scale reading or 2.2 N (0.5 lbf), whichever is greater.
3.1.2 Rigid support compression tester.
3.1.2.1 An upper and lower platen, one rigidly supported and the other driven. Each platen shall have a working
area of at least 100 cm2 (16 in.2 ). The platens are required to have not more than 0.050 mm (0.002 in.) lateral relative
movement, and the rigidly supported platen not more than 0.150 mm (0.006 in.) vertical movement, within a load range
of 0 to 2224 N (0 to 500 lbf). Within a 100 cm2 (16 in.2 ) working area, each platen shall be flat to within 0.0025 mm
.
(0.0001 in.) of the mean platen surface, and the platens shall remain parallel to each other within 1 part in 2000
throughout the test.

3.1.2.2 A means for moving the driven platen to achieve an initial platen separation of at least 60 mm (2.36 in.).
Within a range of platen separation of 0 to 60 mm (0 to 2.36 in.), and within a load range of 0 to 2224 N (500 lbf), the
speed of the driven platen shall be controllable at 12.5 ± 0.2 mm (0.49 ± 0.008 in.) per minute. (For convenience, the
test machine should be capable of rapid return and automatic, settable positioning).
3.1.2.3 A capacity of at least 2224 N (500 lbf).
3.1.2.4 A means for measuring and indicating the maximum load sustained by the test specimen which can be
checked accurately with dead weight loads, loadcell, or proving ring. The accuracy required is 0.5% of scale reading
or 2.2 N (0.5 lbf), whichever is greater.
3.2 Metal guide blocks, (Fig. 1). Two are required to align the specimen vertically in the testing machine.
The exact dimensions of the block are not critical. The blocks referenced in TAPPI T 811 “Edgewise Compression
Strength of Corrugated Fiberboard” can be used in this method.
3.3 A means for cutting specimens having clean, perpendicular and parallel edges with dimensions as per
Section 4.1.
3.3.1 Saw, circular, equipped with a sharp, no-set (hollow-ground or taper-ground is desirable) saw blade.
Ensure that the saw blade is 90 to the table supporting the specimen. Care must be used to insure clean square cuts are
made.
3.3.2 Cutter, with knifecutting blades carefully sharpened to give clean parallel and perpendicular edges. The
cutter may be of single or double blade design.
NOTE 1: It is imperative that all cuts be clean and free of any fraying or damage. They must be parallel and free of any draft.
3.4 Neckdown cutter, for preparing a notched sample from a 50.8 mm x 50.8 mm (2 in. x 2 in.) sample with
tolerances as per Section 4.2.
3.4.1 A neckdown sample cutter consisting of a method of cutting a sample 50.8 mm x 50.8 mm (2 in. x 2 in.)
sample into an “hour glass” shape with a narrowed section of 25.4 ± 0.4 mm (1.00 ± 0.015 in.). One method is a sample
cutter consisting of two single beveled rotating blades fixed in a holder, with the bevel facing away from the sample.
NOTE 2: The radius of the semicircular cuts should not be less than 1 in., the sample tabs must remain 50.8 mm (2 in.) and the narrowed
section must meet the above specification. Care should be taken to insure the hourglass cut is in the center of the specimen.
4.1 From each test unit of a sample obtained in accordance with TAPPI T 400 “Sampling and Accepting a
Single Lot of Paper, Paperboard, Containerboard, or Related Product,” accurately cut 10 representative specimens with
a saw or other device to cut clean parallel and perpendicular edges. Cut all specimens 50.8 ± 0.8 mm (2.0 ± 0.031 in.)
in both width and height. The depth edges should be parallel to each other and perpendicular to the axis of the flutes
(Fig.2). If the test specimens are taken from corrugated shipping containers, they should be taken from areas removed
from scorelines, joints and closures. Specimens should not be taken from obviously damaged areas not representative
of the container as a whole.
4.2 Place each 50.8 mm x 50.8 mm (2 in. x 2 in.) sample in the neckdown cutter and cut the notch in each
edge of the specimen. The loading edges should not be cut. The sample width at its narrowest point will now be 25.4
mm ± 0.4 mm (1.0 ± 0.015 in.).

Precondition and condition the prepared specimens in accordance with TAPPI T 402 “Standard Conditioning and
Testing Atmospheres for Paper, Board, Pulp Handsheets, and Related Products.”
