GENERAL INFORMATION
1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
(a) This manual is made in accordance with SAE J2008.
(b) Repair operations can be separated mainly in the following 3 processes:
1. Diagnosis
2. Removing and Installing, Replacing, Disassembling, Installing and Checking, Adjusting
3. Final Inspection
(c) This text explains the 1st process of ”Diagnosis” (placed in the ”Diagnostics” section) and the 2nd pro-
cess, ”Removing & Installing, Replacing, Disassembling, Installing & Checking, Adjusting”, but the 3rd
process of ”Final Inspection” are omitted.
(d) The following essential operations are not written down in the this manual, these operations, however,
must be done in the practical situation.
(1) Operation with a jack and lift
(2) Cleaning of a removed part when necessary
(3) Visual check
2. INDEX
(a) An INDEX is provided on the first to page XX of each section to the guide you to the item to be repaired.
3. PREPARATION
(a) Use of special service tools (SST) and special service materials (SSM) may be required, depending
on the repairing condition. Be sure to use SST and SSM when they are required and follow the working
procedure properly. A list of SST and SSM is in the Preparation section in this manual.
4. REPAIR PROCEDURES
(a) Component drawing is placed as ”Component section.” It enables you to understand the fitting condi-
tion of the components.
(b) Illustrations of the parts catalog is placed as the component drawing. (In the illustration, parts code
of the parts catalog is described.)
NOTICE:
The parts code described in this text is as of August, 2000. There is a case where the parts code or
ten digits of the parts No. may change, so be sure to place an order using the parts catalog.

(c) Tightening torque, oil applying position, and non–reusable parts are described as points of the proce-
dure.
NOTICE:
In case that the above items can be indicated only by an illustration, component drawing which de-
scribes the points is placed. In that case, all the information such as torque, oil, etc. are described
in the illustration.
(d) Installing procedure of the operation items is performed in the reverse procedure of the removing and
only the case with points is described.
(e) Only items with points are described in the procedure, and the operational portion and content are
placed using an illustration. In the explanations, details of the operational method, standard value and
notice are placed.
(f) There may be a case where the illustrations are used in common with similar models. Therefore there
is a case where the details are different from one of the actual vehicle.
(g) The procedures are presented in a step–by–step format:
(1) The illustration shows what to do and where to do it.
(2) The task heading tells what to do.
(3) The detailed text tells how to perform the task and gives other information such as specifications
and warnings.

(c) Using SST and small torque wrench, measure the pre-
load of the differential gear.

0.98 – 1.57 Nm (10.0 – 16.0 kgfcm 8.7 – 13.9 in.lbf)
Used bearing:
0.49 – 0.78 Nm (5.0 – 8.0 kgfcm 4.3 – 6.9 in.lbf)
C81338 If the preload is not within the specification, remove the differen-
tial from the transaxle case. Re–select the transaxle case side
adjusting shim according to the following table.

(d) Turn the spacer and lever shaft to align the small hole for
locating the staking position in the spacer with the staking
position mark on the lever shaft.
(e) Using a pin punch, stake the spacer through the small
hole.
(f) Check that the space does not turn.

(b) Install the input shaft assy to the stator shaft assy, check
that the input shaft assy turns smoothly.
NOTICE:
Replace the stator shaft assy with new one if rough move-
ment or unusual noise is identified. When replacing, in-
spect the input shaft’s contact surface with the bearing and
if any damage or discolor is found, replace the input shaft
with new one.

(b) Push the driven gear to one side of the body. Using a feel-
er gauge, measure the clearance.
Standard body clearance:
0.10 – 1.15 mm (0.0039 – 0.0059 in.)
Maximum body clearance: 0.15 mm (0.0059 in.)
If the body clearance is greater than the maximum, replace the
oil pump body sub–assembly.

(b) Using SST, a press and a snap ring plier, install the snap
ring to the forward clutch return spring.

HINT:
If the lining of the disc is peeling off or discolored, or
even if a part of the printed mark is defaced, replace
all discs.
Before assembling new discs, soak them in ATF for

(b) Aligning the cutout in the intermediate shaft assy with the
match–mark on the direct clutch drum, install the direct
clutch drum to the intermediate shaft assy.
NOTICE:
Be careful not to damage the O–ring and clutch drum’s lip.

Stop the press when the spring sheet is lowered to the
place 1 – 2 mm (0.039 – 0.078 in.) from the snap ring
groove, preventing the spring sheet from the deform-
ing.
Do not expand the snap ring excessively.
