Understanding the Scores
MPI rather than Percent Proficient: Map Performance Index is used on the MSIP 5 APR report.
To connect our achievement to the accountability measurement, it is better to analyze MPI for
growth rather than just the percent of students who are proficient or advanced. For each student
scoring below basic, the school is awarded one point, for each student scoring basic, three points,
for each student scoring proficient, four points, and for each student scoring advance, five points.

The formula to calculate MPI: MPI= (# of BB/# Reportable* 100)+ (# of B/# Reportable* 300)+
(# of Prof./# Reportable* 400)+ (# of Adv./# Reportable* 500). This is a much more significant
number for performance reporting, and the goal is to get as close to 500 as possible. Here are
two examples of why MPI is more telling than percent of proficient and advanced. Let’s say the
number of reportable students is 100 and in both circumstances, the percent of proficient and
advanced is 75%.

3rd Grade (ELA)- MPI example #1: # of BB is 20, # of B is 5, # of Prof. is 50, # of Adv. is 25.
Using the formula above, the MPI score would be 360.

3rd Grade (ELA)- MPI example #2: # of BB is 5, # of B is 20, # of Prof. is 25, # of Adv. is 50.
Using the formula above, the MPI score would be 415.

The ceiling is 500 (this would mean 100% of students are advanced). By looking at MPI the
number indicates that more students are scoring in the basic to advanced level as the multiplier
increases for basic to advanced.
