<ANS NUM=”36″><P><INST>36. </INST>Atoms and molecules are the simplest

nonliving particles that combine to form proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and
nucleic acids. Cells are the smallest living unit. Similar cells with a common goal
combine to become tissues. Tissues combine to form organs that perform a
general function. Organs that share a common goal are known as organ systems.
All of the eleven organ systems join to form the complete human body, or the
organism.</P></ANS>

<ANS NUM=”37″><P><INST>37. </INST>Cancer begins when the DNA in a cell

undergoes a mutation that results in the loss of regulated cell division. The
mutated cell may undergo a physical change, or dysplasia. The mutated cell may
take on a more permanent physical change, or anaplasia, and form a cluster of
nonfunctional cells called a tumor or neoplasm. The tumors can be benign (slow
growing and not invasive) or they can grow quickly and spread, becoming
malignant and cancerous.</P></ANS>

<ANS NUM=”36″><P><INST>36. </INST>The integumentary system’s main
function is protection. The integumentary system provides a barrier that protects
against the loss of body fluids, damage due to physical injury or UV light, and
invasion by microorganisms. The system helps to regulate body temperature,
and it also provides you with valuable information about the outside environment
through sensory receptors.</P></ANS>

<ANS NUM=”37″><P><INST>37.       </INST>In the event of an injury, the

inflammatory response is triggered. Fluids carrying phagocytic white blood cells
go to the site of the injury. If bleeding occurs, clotting mechanisms are
activated, and a clot or scab forms. The scab temporarily restores the skin’s
integrity. Cells of the deep epidermal layer begin to divide and migrate to the
edges of the scab, and contraction occurs. Stem cells around the scab produce
collagen fibers and ground substance. Blood vessels grow into the dermis,
restoring circulation. Once the dermis has been regenerated, epithelial cells
restore the epidermis. Major injuries result in formation of scar tissue because
there are a large number of collagen fibers and few blood vessels.
