Task A4 | D

 esign brief
🔎 What?

❗Why?

Develop a design brief, which  You have to make a decision at this point in the project: What will you design and create,
presents the analysis of relevant  for whom and why. You want your decision to be based on sufficient background
research.  research.

⚙ How?
Research results summary
● Present the main results of your research (from A2) in a concise list of bullet points. This must be in your own words!
● Illustrate your take-aways with imagery wherever you feel this reduces the amount of writing needed. However, don’t
add images for the sake of adding images. Cite any images that you use.
● Cite (in-text) from the sources that you found your answers from. Use the proper MLA format.

DEFINITIONS  By consulting sources, I have found out:

● According to the Oxford dictionary, fabric means “cloth produced by weaving or
knitting textile fibers.”(Oxford)
● According to the O xford dictionary, textile means “a type of cloth or woven
fabric.”(Oxford)
● According to the O xford dictionary, garments means “an item of
clothing”.(Oxford)

MANUFACTURING  By consulting sources about manufacturing cotton, I have found out:

● Cotton textiles such as T-shirts are produced in the following way:
● First, a large piece of fabric is cut out into the shape of the shirt. The design is
stitched together and then the shoulder parts are out together. The shirt is ironed
and then other parts, such as the sleeves, are added on the garment. A sewing
machine is used to staple 2 pieces of fabric together.
● A sewing machine is used to connect 2 pieces of fabric together.
● Fabric glue can be another way to connect fabric. It is used to glue fabric
together.
● Hand sewing skills can be used to sew the following stitches:
Running stitch
Overstitch/ Overcast
Backstitch
Blanket stitch
French Knot. (red ted art ) Finally pinning them together with a pin

TECHNIQUES AND  By consulting sources such as W

hat is a pattern (Wikipedia)9 Tools You Need to Make
TOOLS FOR MAKING  Your Own Sewing Patterns How to make a tshirt from design to manufacture, I have
found out the following information that I can use for designing and creating my product:
● First, to draw a sewing pattern, you first need to make the pattern on a piece of
paper.
● Second, you trace the edges of the pattern with a writing tool.
● Third, you put this pattern on top of the garment.
● Fourth, you trace the pattern onto the garment.
● Finally, you cut the traces out.

Materials and tools needed:

● 18” C-Thru Ruler
● Tape
● Tracing Wheel
● Pencil
● Eraser
● Tape Measure
● Scissors or Rotary Cutter
● Paper
● Tred
● Pins
● T-shirt
● Needle
● Sewing machines

CLIENT INFORMATION  I have realized the following considerations should be taken into account when designing
and creating my product:
● This is designed for my mother, Sabrina Rubin.
● She is a Belgian who lives in Singapore and who is in her mid-40s
● As a mother, she likes her clothes to be easy to wash.
● She likes natural and expressive drawings on her bags.
● She likes the cream color.

PRACTICAL SKILLS  By completing the practical skills tasks, I have learned the following skills (list & explain):
● I learned how to sew on a button onto a piece of fabric
● Running stitch: I learned how to use a running stitch
● Overstitch: I learned how to do an overstitch on fabric
● Backstitch: I learned how to do a backstitch on a piece of fabric
● I learned how to tie a finishing knot
● Finally, I learned how to braid a knot
●
The skills that will be useful for my project are (list & explain why):
● I will use the running stitch to sew the bottom of the bag together
● I will use the overstitch to secure the top of the tote bag

The skills that I still need to practice or want to learn more about are (list & explain):
● I still need to practice how to do a button because it took me 4 trials. This is
lways looped my tread to the side and not into the button.
because I a
● I need to practice the french knot because I have not practiced it.
● I need to practice how to do a blanket knot because I have not practiced it.
● I need to practice a back stitch because I have not done this yet.

Project commitment
● State what type of product you are going to develop in your project in this unit and outline the direct practical purpose
of this product.
● Outline the bigger picture purpose of the product.
● Describe the client or target audience for whom you will develop the product.

Product and Purpose   In this project, I will create a tote bag.

The purpose of my product is to put supplies and things inside the bag.
Design Goal  My product will address the design problem of textiles being quickly sent to landfills-
by…???
It will solve it by reusing old garments and instead of them going into the landfills. They
can be used to make tote bags.

Intended   My product is intended to be used by my mother, Sabrina Rubin.

Target audience

Target audience representative  I would describe my client as a Belgian who lives in Singapore and who is in her mid-40s.
As a mother, she likes her clothes to be easy to wash. She likes natural and expressive
drawings on her bags. She likes the cream colour.
