Cry Freedom: Follow Up Questions

Choose three of the following essay questions to write about. Each answer should
be a minimum of one paragraph in length (5-7 sentences).

1) Steven Biko discusses the idea of “black consciousness” in Cry

Freedom. In your own words explain what you think he meant by this phrase.

2) During the tour of the townships, Biko and his friends describe the
current society as one where they are only “invited to the table” if they learn how to
play by the white master’s rule. They envision a society where everyone participates
equally in society on their own cultural terms. Do you see ways that this applies to life
in the United States today?

3) Biko has been called the greatest martyr for the struggle against
apartheid. What is a martyr? What other martyrs do you know of, and how can they
help move a cause forward?

4) Biko once said “It is better to die for an idea that will live, than to live
for an idea that will die.” What do you think Biko meant by this? How does his life
represent this sentiment? Do you agree or disagree with this quote and why?

5) “The most potent weapon of the oppressor is the mind of the

oppressed.”
–Steven Biko, 1971
Explain this quote and what it means. How does this quote relate to the education
system for blacks and whites under apartheid, the Black Consciousness Movement,
and the Soweto Uprisings in 1976?

6) The film Cry Freedom tells the story of both Steven Biko and Donald
Woods. Both fought to end apartheid and risked or lost their lives in the struggle for
peace and justice. The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded once a year “to the person who
shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the
abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace
congresses." In your opinion, who deserved to be awarded the Nobel Peach Prize,
Woods or Biko? Justify your position with facts from the movie and articles or class
notes on South Africa.
