Applications of derivatives:

Q1. For the curve y  5x  2 x3 , if x increases at the rate of 2 units/sec, then how fast is the slope of
curve changing when x = 3? [Ans: 72 units/sec]
Q2. Height of a tank in the form of an inverted cone is 10m and radius of its circular base is 2m .the
tank contains water and is leaking through a hole at the vertex at the rate of 0.02 cu m/sec. Find the
rate at which the water level changes and the rate at which the radius of the water level changes
when the height of the water level is 5 m. [Ans 1/25m/s, 1/100m/s.]
Q3. Water is dripping out from a conical funnel at a uniform rate of 4cm3/s through a tiny hole at the
vertex in the bottom. When the slant height of the water is 3 cm, find the rate of decrease of the

Q5. A ladder 13 m long leans against a wall. The foot of the ladder is pulled along the ground away
from the wall at the rate of 1.5 m/s. How fast is the angle  between the ladder and the ground is

Q6. A kite is moving horizontally at a height of 151.5 meters. If the speed of kite is 10 m/s, how fast is
the string being let out; when the kite is 250 m away from the boy who is flying the kite?

junction of two roads inclined at 45° to each other. If they travel by different roads, fin the rate at
which they are being separated.

Presentation and Submission of Project Report


At the end of the stipulated term, each student will prepare and submit his/her project report.
Following essentials are required to be fulfilled for its preparation and submission.
1. The total length of the project will be of 25 to 30 pages.

2. The project should be handwritten.
3. The project should be presented in a neat folder.

The project report should be developed in the following sequence-


1. Cover page should include the title of the Project, student information, school and year.
2. List of contents. (Sample Attached)
3. Acknowledgements and preface (acknowledging the institution, the places visited and the persons
who have helped). (Sample Attached)
4. Introduction.
5. Topic with suitable heading.
6. Planning and activities done during the project, if any.
7. Observations and findings of the visit.
8. Conclusions (summarized suggestions or findings, future scope of study).
9. Photographs (if any).
10. Appendix

12. Signatures of the teachers.
At the completion of the evaluation of the project, it should be punched in the center so that the
report may not be reused but is available for reference only. The project will be returned after
evaluation. The school may keep the best projects.
