Learning Competency:
Differentiate biotic and abiotic components of an ecosystem

Objectives:
Hello! Everyone….. as you walk through this activity you will be able to:

 identify biotic and abiotic components of an ecosystem.

 trace the different nutrient cycles that takes place in an ecosystem.
 realize the importance of the components of ecosystem.
GUIDE CARD
1
Hi!!! Do you know that organisms
act together with other organisms
and with non-living things? Yes
my dear learners !!!!!! Organisms
also depend on non-living
materials for survival.

The ecosystem is where living and non- living things interact with one another. The
living component of the ecosystem is called the biotic factors and the non-living
component is called the abiotic factors in the ecosystem.
How important do you think the
environment is in man’s life?

Could one live

without it?
Are there some parts man could live without? Are there some
parts of the environment related to other parts? Learn more
about the ecosystem as you go through the different activities
waiting for you… GOOD LUCK….
Activity card 1
Directions: Identify which of the following pictures is an ecosystem. Then identify what kind
of ecosystem it is.

1. Is this an ecosystem? If yes then what kind?

GUIDE CARD 2
For your information, there are two components in an ecosystem:
ABIOTIC COMPONENTS AND BIOTIC COMPONENTS.

WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THESE COMPONENTS?

Activity card 2

Are you ready to answer now the questions below? Have a try!!!!!

Direction. Go back to the different pictures of an ecosystem that you identify above. Note the biotic
components and abiotic components present in each ecosystem.

GUIDE CARD 3
An ecosystem continues to exist because of the interaction of the biotic components
and the abiotic components. But aside from that it is also worth to trace the different
nutrient cycles that takes place in an ecosystem.

Directions: Living organisms also require nutrient elements particularly, carbon and
v
nitrogen which they take from the environment. Below are parts of the nitrogen and
it
carbon cycles. Study the diagrams and answer the questions that follow.

1. At which point in the cycle would nitrogen-fixing bacteria be found?

___________________________________________________________
a. What is the role of nitrogen-fixing bacteria in the cycle
_____________________________________________________
b. What benefit is received by the bacteria?
_____________________________________________________
c. How are nitrates returned to the soil?

2. Why is carbon needed by living organisms?

_______________________________________________________________
a. What is the source of carbon in the cycle?

What have I learned…….

I learned that……

1. Every part of the environment ______________ with other parts of the

environment.
2. Those things in the environment that are alive and those that were once alive are
the ________factors of the environment.
3. Those things in the environment that are not and never were alive are the
___________ factors of the environment.
4. Animals need__________ to survive.
5. Plants need_____________ to survive.

Is that all you know…..?

Try another one……..!
