4.4 Magnet System

4.4.1 Helium Level measurement

The liquid helium level function measures the resistance of a
superconductive wire partially plunged in the helium. A stabilized
current through the sensor maintains the wire in helium gas in the
resistive state, the portion in liquid remains in the superconducting
state. The sensor voltage output is proportional to liquid helium level.
The normal Helium level measurement mode (Slow mode) performs
automatically a measure during 1 minute once a day at 2:00 am.
A special measurement mode (Fast mode) can be launched in the
service mode. It performs a measurement every 20 seconds for 1 hour
and then switches back in to the idle mode.
A Helium level measurement (Slow mode) is performed during 1
minute at BMU Power on.

4.4.2 Helium pressure control (Only in BMU-4.0)

The Helium pressure is measured by an absolute pressure sensor
with a 4-20mA output.

BMU-4.x Page 8
The Helium is refreshed by a cold head. A controller integrated in
the BMU-4.0 regulates the Helium pressure on acting on a heater
plunged in the Helium.
The controller monitors the Helium pressure.
The BMU-4.0 monitors and controls the Helium pressure and the
heating power.
The regulation target can be changed in the service mode.

4.4.3 Nitrogen Level measurement (Only in BMU-4.2)

The liquid Nitrogen level is measured by a capacitive liquid level
sensor with a 0/-5V output.
The BMU-4.2 monitors and controls the Nitrogen level
measurement. It also detects when the nitrogen sensor is not connected
and send an alarm in this case.

4.4.4 Screening
Starting a screening will deliver a low current in the screening coil
during two minutes to decrease the unwanted magnetic field.
The operation is started manually, and ends automatically after 2
minutes, but can be stopped during this time.

4.4.5 Emergency magnet quench

The BMU-4.x includes a Magnet Emergency Run Down Unit (ERDU)
able to quench the Magnet.
There are two emergency quench buttons.
- One is located on the front panel of the BMU-4.x in the technical
room. (Local Quench Button)
- The other is placed near the magnet, in the magnet room.
(Remote quench Button)
By pushing one of the two quench buttons (Local or Remote), the
BMU will power up the magnet quench heater plunged in the liquid
Helium, the superconducting coil will enter in the normal resistive
state and cause the magnet quench.
After a quench the compressor will automatically stopped after 15
minutes.
An emergency quench can be initiated either by the power line
supply or by the batteries in case there is a power break.

4.4.6 Temperature measurement

The BMU-4.x can measure the temperature from 4 PT100 sensors.
The PT100 are wired in 4wire mode.
The BMU-4.x monitors and controls the temperature level.

4.4.7 Burst disk state detection

The burst disk serves to indicate if a quench has occurred.

BMU-4.x Page 9
The BMU-4.x monitors and controls the state of the magnet burst
disk.
If the BMU-4.x detects that the burst disk is broken, the compressor
is switched off after 15minute.

4.4.8 Compressor interface

The BMU-4.0 only can drive the compressor, monitor and control
the compressor state.

BMU-4.x Page 10
5 Technical specifications

5.1 Environmental conditions

This BMU-4.x unit is build for inside use only on a maximum high
level of 2000m above sea level (6600 feet).
No specific cooling or ventilation is required.
It should, however, be in an environment which conforms, the 5°C -
40°C (41°F - 104°F) thermal specifications, a 80% maximum relative
humidity of air and a contamination level of 2 (means a normal, only non
conductive contamination, temporary conductivity due to condensation
is possible).
Be careful to install the BMU-4.x in a place preserving access to the
Emergency quench button.
The BMU-4.x must be connected to the main power. As it is not
equipped with a main switch on the front panel, be careful to offer the
possibility to switch off the main power supply in case of emergency.

Only qualified Bruker personal is authorized to install the

BMU-4.x

6.1 First installation

Warning!
Before connecting any cable, check the position of the both
red magnet Quench button. To unlock and to set it to
neutral position (out), turn it to the right.
In lock position, it would start a magnet quench!

 Install the 16 LR6/AA batteries in the batteries holder

 Connect the following plugs to the BMU-4.x rear panel
o Rem. Quench cable
o RS 232 cable
o Magnet cable
o Temp1 cable
o Compressor cable (only If BMU-4.0)
o Alarm cable
o Nitrogen cable (only If BMU-4.2)
 Connect the Mains cable to power UP the BMU-4.x
 If alarms occur, shut down the buzzer (F3 key) and check the alarms
(Tableau 12 Alarms screen).
 Verify Time and date (Tableau 8 Time and date).

6.2 Helium level Measure verification

If you have some doubt with the helium level value, you can verify
the functioning of the BMU-4.x by connecting cable test sensor 0% and
100%.
Operating method:
 Remove the main power supply.
 Remove the magnet cable and connect at its place one of the 2 cable
sensors.
 Plug the main power supply in.
Once you have finished testing the two levels, don't forget to:
 Remove the main power supply.
 Reconnect the cable of the magnet.
 Plug in the main power supply.

BMU-4.x Page 21

Important:
Periodically check the screen of the BMU-4.x for the
presence of alarms.
Keep the BMU-4.x internal timekeeper on date to have
valid time and date alarms tagging.

7.1 Getting started

 Plug in the line power cord.
 Upon power up and CPU booting, the BMU-4.x panel displays a
starting screen:

8.1 User maintenance

The only user maintenance is to change the batteries.
Batteries replacement cases:
- The 16 batteries must be changed every six months in case of a
normal use of the BMU-4.x (BMU is always been powered by the
main power supply).
- If the BMU-4.x has been powered off for more than 2 days
(without connecting out the batteries) you must replace the 16
batteries.
- If battery voltage alarm indicates a “battery low” alarm.
Operating:
- Unlock drawers containing the batteries and remove batteries.
- Insert the new batteries as indicated by the polarity symbols (+
and -) marked.
- Push the batteries drawer in the compartment.
- Start a battery test to verify the new batteries (Tableau 10
Batteries screen).

8.2 Manufacturer maintenance

There is no manufacturer maintenance for the BMU-4.x.
