Standard operating Procedure of

APPLYING PESTICIDE TO MAIZE

The word Pesticide combines two words which are Pest and Cide. Pest is an Animal that can
cause disturbance or damage to the crops. “Cide” means to kill. The pesticide is used to kill
pests.

Materials required:
 Jumpsuits
 Gloves
 Googles
 Knapsack filled with pesticide
 Respirator (Filter)

The following steps are followed to apply the Pesticide to Maize:

1: Make sure you have observed that your maize needs to be sprayed.

2: Make sure you have filled knapsack with the pesticide, and you wear Personal Protective
Equipment.
3: Step-forward towards the maize plot and go carefully cause the knapsack is heavy.
4: Regulate well the nozzles well such that pesticide comes out in the form of fog and can’t burn the
leaves of maize.
5: Pull-up and down pumping level and directs the nozzles of the lance towards the leaves of the
maize.
6: Start to squeeze the trigger of the lance to let the pesticide pass through the nozzles.
7: Continue to squeeze the trigger with the right hand simultaneously Pulling up and down The
Pumping level.
8: Continue all the plot until the whole pesticide is fully Exhausted.
9: Step back from the plot and go towards the store to remove all Personal Protective Equipment.
Keep them Separate from those which are clean.

Notes:
 Note that the pesticide you apply to maize Does not kill pests on maize only, it also kills other
organisms that are beneficial to the soil and to the maize.
 So, in order to manage these risks, you must apply the pesticide to maize as the last resort
after practicing other Methods of fighting against pests.
