PANDIWA SA CHAVACANO

1.1. TA + base form for the present tense;

1.2. YA + base form for the future tense;
1.3 AY + base form for the future tense ;
Or:
EL + base form for the future tense
1.4 Silent / Understood Linking Verb

A Verb or Pandiwa in Zamboanga Chabacano comes in the following forms:

1. The simple present tense of the verb is always with the word “ ta “. In Zamboanga Chabacano the
form of the verb is always constant . It never changes its forms regardless of whether the subject / noun
is in the singular or plural form ; and whether it is in the first person ,second , or third person points of
view.

2. The simple past tense of the verb is always proceed by the word “ ya “ . It is constant regardless of the
number and person / point of view of the subject / noun.

3. The simple future tense of the verb is always preceded by the word “ ay “ or “el” . There is a variation
of these two words. Some native Zamboanguenos use el while the other use “ay “ . it is also constant
despite the number and person / points of view of the subject / noun .

4.The simple progressive tense of the verb Zamboanga Chabacano is exactly the same as the simple
present form:

The “ ta” + base form ;

In Zamboanga Chabacano when one says:

Ta come kame mani – means two things ;

1. We eat peanuts or (2) We are eating peanuts (right now).

The first meaning is in the present tense form while the second meaning is in the progressive form.

In the next example , the meaning is more skewed toward the progressive form of the verb:

Ta mira kame cine de Vilma Santos – means that :

(1) We are watching a movie of Vilma Santos ( right now ) than the second meaning (2) We watch a
movie of Vilma santos .

This is because whe one says that he watches the movies (any movies for that matter as a fact )
the correct form is “We watch movies of Vilma Santos”. In this sentence , the word movie is plural.
Therefore in Zamboanga Chabacano to state a fact the one watches any movies of Vilma Santos would
be:

Ta mira maga cine de Vilma Santos.

In the third example , the sentence can either be present or progressive:

Ta anda kame na escuela todo el diya .

This sentence either means:

(1) We go to school every day.

Or.

(1) We are going to school everyday

5. Since most of the time , the Linking Verbs in Zamboanga Chabacano is silent or understood , therefore
there is a problem on putting the correct verb for the correct conjunction .

However , sometimes , the word “amo” is used as a linking verb , but is not appropriate in most of the
sentences.

The word “amo” can only be used in this type of sentence:

El alcalde del ciudad amo si Celso Lobregat .

( The mayor of the city is Celso Lobregat)

But these sentence are also correct even with the absence of the word “amo” ; for example :

El alcalde del ciudad si Celso Lobregat .

 (The mayor of the city (is) Celso lobregat)

*Silent / understood linking verb

Or:

Si Celso Lobregat el alcalde del ciudad.

*(Celso Lobregat (is) the mayor of the city)

*Silent / understood linking verb

E. The Silent ? Understood Lingking Verb

,
A Zamboanga Chabacano the Linking Verb is silent , another perspective one can say that it is
understood to be present in the sentence.

Some examples are:

1. Mi amigo bien rico .

(My friend very rich )
Dynamic : (My friend is very rich)

Some Spanish speaking native of Zamboanga would say:

Mi amigo es muy rico.

(Ma friend is very rich)

This may be understood by majority of the Zamboangurnos but ( terminology ) may not be used
by them . Because “muy” a Spanish word which means “very”,was already replaced by “bien” by the
majority of the native speakers.

In the above example (mi amigo es muy rico ) has a lingking verb “es” because it is relatively
Spanish in context ,not Zamboanga Chabacano.
