COURSE CODE : HOA 223 COURSE TITLE : History of Architecture III
FACULTY : Ralph Intal
LECTURE HOURS: Three (3) hours

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
History of architecture that covers the development of architecture in different
regions of Asia.
The students should be able to:
a. Identify the effects of natural (geography, geology, and climate) and
human factors (society, politics, culture and religion) to the development of
Asian architecture.
b. Understand how Asian architects and builders developed methods and
techniques in building.
c. Identify the characteristics of architectural elements (wall, opening, roof,
column, ornament, and decorative patterns) and know why and how these
elements vary from different regions.
d. Be familiar with architectural terminologies used in different parts of Asia.
e. Be familiar with key architects, individuals and group of people that
influenced the growth of architecture in Asia.
f. Identify key events (wars, inventions of materials and development of
technology) in history and understand the effects of these occasions to the
advancement of Asian Architecture.

1. LECTURE DISCUSSION - Combines the lecture with short question


periods or a series of short question periods for students.
2. PRESENTATION – Combination of slide shows and video
presentations (video documentary of specific building examples and
history of a specific culture and style of architecture)
3. DEMONSTRATION – presentation of how different methods of
INSTRUCTIONAL constructions were done and how the materials were used and
METHODOLOGIES applied during a specific period of development.
4. INDEPENDENT STUDY – assignment of specific task that will be
done at home such as drawings/sketches and clippings.
5. RECITATION – oral examination that requires students to recite
what they have learned.
6. EXAMINATION –given to assess the level of learning of the students
through written tests with a variety of exam types such as drawing,
multiple choice, essay, identification and enumeration.

CLASS POLICIES:
1. UNIFORM: Students should come to class wearing the prescribed university
uniform (which includes the ID). Those who are not in the proper uniform will
be marked absent.

2. ATTENDANCE: Attendance will be checked after a fifteen (15) minute


allowance. Those who will come after the roll call shall be marked absent,
though they are still allowed to attend the class. No student shall exceed six
(6) absences, otherwise CHED requirement shall be imposed- student shall
be dropped from the class roster.

3. REQUIREMENTS: In case of student’s absence and failure to submit an


assignment or plate, the student should be able to submit the requirement
within a week after the absence provided there is a valid reason. An excuse
letter from a parent (and a residence certificate) or a medical certificate (in
case of sickness) should be presented upon submission

4. CLASSROOM ETHICS: No student is allowed to leave the room during class


time to buy any required materials or conduct any business outside the
classroom. Silence and order should be maintained inside the classroom.
