1.0 INTRODUCTION

KEMRON Environmental Services, Inc. (KEMRON) has prepared this Pilot Test Report
to present site specific data based on field pilot testing activities completed on
September 17-20, 2007 and October 23-25, 2007, at Atlas Missile Site 10 of the Former
Lincoln Air Force Base in York, Nebraska. This report outlines the site background, test
objectives, test procedures/equipment, and draws conclusions based on field data. Data
evaluation as a result of the pilot test will be utilized as a basis of future remedial
engineering design.

1.1 Background

Site 10 is the former Atlas “F” missile facility operated by the Former Lincoln AFB from
1960 to 1964, which is illustrated in Figure 1. The major structure at the site is the
underground missile silo, which is 174 ft in depth and 52 ft in diameter. Historic
operations at the former missile silo have resulted in trichloroethene (TCE)
concentrations in soil and groundwater which exceed Nebraska Department of
Environmental Quality regulatory standards for chlorinated volatile organic compounds
(CVOCs). The primary contaminant of concern is TCE. Site 10 was deactivated and
conveyed to a private individual in 1965.

Between 1999 and 2005 soil investigations were conducted to investigate TCE
concentrations in soil. These investigations were primarily focused on the pathway from
the septic tank to leach field onsite. Locations and concentrations of the soil boring are
included as Figure 2a. The septic system investigation revealed an area of
approximately 8,978 square feet, with TCE soil concentrations above the Nebraska
Department of Environmental Quality (NDEQ) remediation goal of 57.0 μg/kg.

In 2006, a series of soil borings were installed at the site by KEMRON to investigate
TCE concentrations in soil. Figure 2b, illustrates the locations of these soil borings and
their associated TCE concentrations. Northeast of the silo at boring LA10-SB06-103,
TCE concentrations at 50 feet in depth were 2,090 μg/kg. This represents the highest
soil TCE concentration found onsite. Subsequently, the area around soil boring LA10-
SB06-103 was further delineated to reveal an area of approximately 10,275 square feet
which has TCE soil concentrations above the NDEQ remediation goal of 57.0 μg/kg.
During the soil investigation, samples were collected at 20, 30, 40, and 50 feet below
ground surface (bgs). A majority of the TCE found in soil above the NDEQ remediation
goal is between 40 and 50 feet bgs, which is the transition zone between loess layers
and the Grand Island formation. This data is illustrated in Figure 3 and Table 1.

There are four distinct stratiographic layers typically found onsite: Peorian loess,
Loveland loess, the Grand Island Formation, and glacial deposits. During the silo
construction, an open cut excavation was used until groundwater was encountered.
This resulted in a bowl shaped excavation which was approximately 49.5 feet in depth
and 325 feet in diameter. Once construction was complete, the inferred backfill was the
stockpiled soil from the excavation. The resulting composition of the soils around the
silo is a mixture of silty clays with lenses of fine to coarse sands. The open cut
excavation and generalized soil cross sections are included as Figures 5 through 7.

In August 2007, KEMRON installed a soil vapor extraction (SVE) well along with eight
observation wells approximately 50 ft northeast of the former missile silo. The SVE pilot
test was designed and installed in the general vicinity of soil boring LA10-SB06-103,
where the greatest TCE concentrations were found in soil. The SVE and observation
well locations are illustrated in Figures 8, 9a, and 9b. The depths and screened intervals
of SVE and observation wells are illustrated in Figure 10.

1.2 Objectives

In order to determine the overall effectiveness of Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) at a

specific site, field pilot tests should be performed prior to the engineering design of a
SVE system. Pilot tests usually measure pressures, flow rates, contaminant mass
removal, and other system parameters. The primary objective of an SVE pilot test is to
demonstrate that soil vapor extraction has the potential to perform significant
remediation of a contaminant mass when operated over a longer time period. A second
objective of the SVE pilot test is the determination of the radius of influence. The pilot
test will indicate the response of the vadose zone to varying levels of vacuum. The
radius of influence is determined by monitoring the effect of applied vacuum in an
extraction well in relation to surrounding observation wells. Another objective of the SVE
pilot tests is to provide engineers with contaminant mass removal and corresponding
flow rates in order to prepare adequate design specifications and cost estimates for
remediation equipment. However, long-term trends of removal rates cannot be assumed
based on data collected during short-term pilot tests.

2.0 PROCEDURES

2.1 Methods

Soil vapor extraction (SVE) is a proven and effective method of extracting residual VOCs
from unsaturated soils. In general, SVE is conducted by the application of a vacuum on
an extraction well and monitoring the effect of the vacuum on wells located at varying
distances from the extraction point. The subsurface air/vapor flow also enhances in-situ
volatilization, allowing for the removal of the VOCs as vapors.

To increase airflow and recovery, ambient air (aspiration air) is introduced at the
extraction well. An airflow meter is mounted to the test well assembly to measure the
additional volume of aspiration air that is added to the well. Additionally, two vacuum
gauges are mounted to the test well assembly to measure the induced vacuum of the
stinger and the well annulus.

The vapor extracted from the well is conveyed through a flexible vacuum hose to the
Multi-Phase Extraction (MPE) unit where any extracted vapors are processed through an
air/water separator and then are discharged into the atmosphere or are treated with a
thermal gas treatment system. During the pilot test, specific system parameters such as
vacuum levels, flow rate, temperature, and vapor concentrations are recorded at regular
intervals. Figure 11 illustrates the process flow of the MPE pilot test unit. Additionally,
Figure 12 illustrates a typical pilot test well manifold assembly.

To monitor the subsurface effects of the extraction, eight observation wells were
installed within a predetermined radius of the extraction well. These observation wells
were monitored during the pilot test at regular intervals. All data collected from the pilot
test was evaluated to determine the effectiveness of SVE as a remedial strategy for the
specific site.

Specifically, this SVE pilot test consisted of two types of induced vacuum tests
conducted at extraction wells. The first test type is a stepped-rate test, in which varying
levels of vacuum were applied to the extraction well at timed intervals. Flow rates, vapor
concentrations, and vacuum influence at observation wells were collected during the
test.

The second type of SVE test preformed at the subject site was continuous SVE pilot
testing. This test, using the optimal induced vacuum pressure at the extraction well
(determined by the stepped-rate test), was utilized to evaluate the actual area of
influence in the subsurface and the capability of the SVE system to remove contaminant
mass over a longer term extraction. In addition, this test also determined the variability
in permeability of unsaturated soils over the site, and estimated the well efficiency of the
proposed extraction wells.

2.2 Extraction Well

Prior to mobilization, research into the lithology of the site and depth of contaminant
concentrations determined the construction and placement of the extraction well. Final
field decisions were made based on accessibility and other site conditions. The

extraction well was installed by a certified Nebraska Driller and meets Nebraska Water
Well Standards. For the subject site, well LA10-SVE07-1R was utilized as the initial
extraction well. From the top of the 4-inch casing, LA10-SVE07-1R is 55 feet bgs, and
screened between 15 and 55 feet bgs. Subsequent testing utilized LA10-OW07-3,
LA10-OW07-4, and LA10-OW07-7 as the extraction wells. The water table at the subject
site is located approximately 70 feet bgs, and was not encountered prior to the initial
extraction test conducted on September 17, 2007. However, water was encountered on
October 23, 2007 in observation wells LA10-OW07-3 and LA10-OW07-4 at depths of
28.92 and 43.39 feet bgs, respectively. The water is assumed to be associated with
recent rain events and was purged from the wells before pilot testing occurred.
Recharge in these wells was not observed. Boring logs for extraction wells are included
as Appendix A, and soil was classified according to ASTM method D 2488 – 00 (Unified
Soil Classification).

The initial step test conducted at extraction well LA10-SVE07-1R, consisted of five steps
to determine the vapor extraction flow rates and vacuum influence for five different
vacuum pressures: 4 inches of Mercury (inHg), 8 inHg, 12 inHg, 16 inHg, and 20 inHg
(54.38 inches of water column (in w.c.), 108.76 in w.c., 163.14 in w.c., 217.52 in w.c.,
and 271.9 in w.c., respectively). Each step of vacuum influence was held relatively
constant for three hours (180 minutes) and observed for that period of time.

Subsequent step tests were performed at extraction wells LA10-OW07-3, LA10-OW07-

4, and LA10-OW07-7. Vacuum pressures of 4 inHg, 8 inHg, 12 inHg, and 16 inHg were
used during these tests.

The results of the stepped rate test are used to determine the optimal vacuum pressure
to conduct the continuous rate test. This decision is based on radius of influence, pore
volume exchange, VOC extraction rates, and full-scale system design. Continuous tests
typically operate for 24 to 48-hours, depending on observations in the field. The purpose
is to produce data which will aid in the overall design of the full-scale sysem.

2.3 Observation Wells

Observation wells utilized for measuring the subsurface response to the SVE pilot test
were strategically located around the perimeter of extraction well LA10-SVE07-1R. A
total of eight observation wells: LA10-OW07-3, LA10-OW07-4, LA10-OW07-5, LA10-
OW07-6, LA10-OW07-7, LA10-OW07-8, LA10-OW07-9, and LA10-OW07-10 were
utilized for this particular pilot test event. In addition, both LA10-SVE07-1 and LA10-
SVE07-1R were used as observation points during tests conducted on observation
wells.

Typically observation wells utilized are installed along 90, 120, or 180 degree radials
from the extraction well. The eight observation wells were installed radially from the
extraction well at distances of 5, 10, 25, and 40 feet from extraction well LA10-SVE07-
1R. Actual distances from extraction wells are included in each data sheet for individual
tests. The observation wells were also installed to different depths in order to monitor
the effects of vacuum influence on the varying lithology at the site. One observation
well, LA10-OW07-7 was installed to a total depth of 25 feet bgs, with a screened interval
of 15 to 25 feet bgs. Observation well LA10-OW07-3 was installed to a depth of 35 feet

4

bgs., with a screened interval of 25 to 35 feet bgs. Two observation wells, LA10-OW07-
4 and LA10-OW07-9, were installed to a depth of 45 feet bgs, with screened intervals of
35 to 45 feet bgs. Four observation wells, LA10-OW07-5, LA10-OW07-6, LA10-OW07-
8, and LA10-OW07-10, were installed to a depth of 55 feet bgs, with a screened interval
of 45 to 55 feet bgs. Boring logs for the observation wells are included as Appendix A.

Observation wellhead assemblies were mounted to each observation well and gauged at
each timed interval. Differential pressures in each observation well were measured
using a digital manometer.

2.4 Equipment

The KEMRON Multi-Phase Extraction (MPE) Unit is a completely self-contained, trailer-

mounted unit equipped with two (2) Nash 11 horsepower liquid ring vacuum pumps each
capable of 140 acfm @ 20 in. Hg vacuum, a 90-gallon capacity liquid knock-out
separator tank with level controls, a Gould’s 1.5 hp transfer pump, an electrical control
panel, a 54 kw, 240 VAC 3-phase power generator, a custom test manifold with gauges,
custom observation wellheads, a digital manometer, flexible vacuum hoses, an interface
probe, and a multi gas explosimeter/photoionization detector (MultiRAE). The data
recorded with the MultiRAE was calibrated for the site specific readings using the
manufacturer’s correction factors for TCE. This mobile MPE unit was selected because
of its ability to handle a combined liquid/vapor stream, and the ability to produce
significant air flow rates under a wide range of vacuums. During the pilot test, specific
system parameters are recorded at regular intervals.

For this SVE pilot test, KEMRON choose to monitor the differential pressures in
observation wells with a digital manometer, because it is capable of accurately recording
differential vacuum pressures of inHg to the nearest hundredth and inH2O to the nearest
tenth. The digital Manometer unit can also be zeroed/tared before each data collection
interval, which takes into account local barometric pressure differences.

Typical SVE induced pressure monitoring utilizes Magnehelic gauges mounted on

observation wellheads, however these gauges have proved inaccurate in past
experiences and were not used during this test. The inconsistencies in data observed
when using Magnehelic gauges are as follows: Magnehelic gauges tend to be affected
by changes in temperature, which can significantly change pressure readings during day
and night tests. The observed trend is to have greater influence during day (higher
temperatures) than at night (lower temperatures). Additionally, Magnehelic gauges are
highly sensitive instruments and may not necessarily be designed for a portable system.
Finally, Magnehelic gauges do not offer the ability to zero efficiently. Zeroing is done by
manually turning a screw and lining the needle up to 0, which doesn’t present a precise
level of accuracy. For these reasons, the digital Manometer was chosen to measure the
differential pressures in observation wells.

3.0 RESULTS

3.1 Extraction Well - LA10-SVE07-1R

On September 17-18, 2007, KEMRON conducted a step test on LA10-SVE07-1R.

Vacuum pressures of 4 inHg, 8 inHg, 12 inHg, 16 inHg, and 20 inHg were used during
the step test on this well at an interval of 3 hours per each vacuum increment. From the
initial reading of the test, induced vacuum was observed in all four observation wells,
LA10-OW07-5, LA10-OW07-6, LA10-OW07-8, and LA10-OW07-10, screened 45 to 55
feet bgs. As the vacuum was increased at the extraction well during each step, the
differential pressure at each observation also increased and then stabilized.
Observations of vacuum influence were also exhibited in LA10-OW07-9, screened 35 to
45 feet bgs, during the test. However, the inconsistency of these readings demonstrates
that significant vacuum did not influence this well located 22.2 feet away. These
deviations as well as the lack of influence in LA10-OW07-3, LA10-OW07-4, LA10-
OW07-7 and LA10-OW07-9 can be attributed to the backfilled soil lithology surrounding
the well screen.

Based on the results from the stepped-rate test conducted on LA10-SVE07-1R, the
induced vacuum pressure to operate the continuous run SVE test was established to be
10 inHg. This determination is based on several aspects including the radius of vacuum
influence, flow rates, pore space volumes, and the cost of full-scale system design.
Vacuum influence was first detected in observation well LA10-OW07-10 (40 feet from
extraction well) during the 8 inHg test. These results of observed stable influence were
replicated during the 12 inHg test. Additionally, the flow rates observed during the 8 and
12 inHg test have the capacity to exchange 4.6 and 10.1 pore space volumes from the
subsurface per day, assuming a 20 foot radius of influence, respectively. Sufficient pore
volume exchange will be needed to efficiently remove VOCs within the established
timeframe, and typical system design requires at least 1.0 pore volume removal per day.
The step test illustrated that over 1.0 pore volume removal per day, assuming a 20 foot
radius of influence, occurred during all of the stepped rates, 4 through 20 inHg. While
greater extraction of VOCs was accomplished during the later tests, typical permanent
SVE systems do not operate at these rates of vacuum. Thus, the continuous vacuum
pressure SVE test, which is designed to simulate a long-term system, was conducted at
the induced vacuum pressure of 10 inHg or 135.95 in w.c.

The results of the stepped rate and continuous test are included as Table 8.

3.2 Extraction Well - LA10-OW07-3

A stepped rate test was conducted at LA10-OW07-3 on October 24, 2007. This well
was chosen as an extraction well based on its screened interval of 25 to 35 feet bgs,
which is located within loess lithology. Vacuum pressures of 8 inHg, 12 inHg, and 16
inHg were used during the step test on this well. Observation wells did not exhibit any
influence during the course of this test, except one reading of 0.04 in well LA10-OW07-4
during the first reading. The step at 16 inHg was not conducted for the entire 3-hour
period like all other step tests. The decision to run the 16 inHg test was to run a
abbreviated test to measure if induced vacuum could be measured in observation wells
with increased vacuum at the extraction well. However, vacuum influence was not
observed in any wells after one hour and the test was terminated.

6

Atlas Missile Site 10

The results of the stepped rate test are included as Table 8.

3.3 Extraction Well - LA10-OW07-4

A stepped rate test was conducted at LA10-OW07-4 on October 24, 2007. This well
was chosen as an extraction well based on its screened interval of 35 to 45 feet bgs,
which is located within loess lithology and in the transition zone to the fine sand layer.
Vacuum pressures of 8 inHg and 12 inHg were used during the step test on this well. A
majority of observation wells did not exhibit differential vacuum pressure, however LA10-
OW07-3 recorded pressure throughout the entire test, ranging from 0.22 to 0.90 inHg.
Initial differential pressures observed were thought to be in response to the step test
which had been conducted on LA10-OW07-3 earlier that day. Therefore the well was
opened to ambient air several times during the test to allow any vacuum pressure to
stabilize. Following stabilization, vacuum pressure was again recorded. The distance
from the extraction well, LA10-OW07-4, to LA10-OW07-3 is 9.35 feet.

The results of the stepped rate test are included as Table 8.

3.4 Extraction Well - LA10-OW07-7

Both a stepped rate test and a continuous run SVE test were conducted at LA10-OW07-
7 on October 23, and October 25, 2007, respectively. This well was chosen as an
extraction well based on its screened interval of 15 to 25 feet bgs., which is located
within loess lithology. Vacuum pressures of 4 inHg, 8 inHg, and 12 inHg were used
during the step test on this well.

The step test conducted on this well did not produce vacuum influence in any of the
observation wells until the 12 inHg test. During this test, influence was first detected in
LA10-SVE07-1R at time 23:30. During the next reading influence was once again
detected in LA10-SVE07-1R, but also in LA10-OW07-5, LA10-OW07-6, LA10-OW07-8,
and LA10-OW07-10. Each of the wells which experienced induced vacuum pressure
was screened from 45 to 55 feet bgs, in the fine sand layer. This influence was most
likely caused by a short circuit in well LA10-SVE07-1R, since it is screened from 15 to 55
feet bgs. The distance from the extraction well, LA10-OW07-7, to LA10-SVE07-1R is
8.42 feet.

Based on the step test results, KEMRON conducted a continuous 7-hour SVE test on
LA10-OW07-7. This test was intended to reproduce the effects of the step test, where
influence was observed in LA10-SVE07-1R and other observation wells screened in the
fine sand lithology. Similar results did not occur from this test. During a majority of this
test, vacuum pressure was observed in observation well LA10-OW07-3. The induced
vacuum pressures ranged from 0.06 to 0.20 inHg. The distance between the extraction
well, LA10-OW07-7, and LA10-OW07-3 is 16.85 feet.

The results of the stepped rate and continuous test are included as Table 8.

7

Atlas Missile Site 10

3.5 Radius of Influence – LA10-SVE07-1R

The vacuum radius of influence was determined by plotting the distance from the
extraction well to the observation wells versus the induced vacuum pressure. In a
homogeneous lithology, recorded vacuum readings should exponentially decline with
distance from the extraction well at a rate dependent upon the horizontal permeability.
The vadose zone vacuum radius of influence can be determined for any desired vacuum
pressure. By drawing a best-fit line and utilizing the 0.10 in. w.c. engineering standard
as an indication of induced vacuum pressure, a radius of influence can be extrapolated
for the extraction well. However, due to varying soil permeability and discontinuities in
the subsurface, a conservative vacuum pressure of 1.0 in. w.c. is typically utilized as an
indication of induced vacuum pressure.

The influence of the vacuum pressures of the step-rate test were plotted to illustrate
trends of vacuum influence at the site, and for the determination of the optimal vacuum
pressure for a full-scale system design.

Based on the results of both the SVE stepped rate test and the continuous run test, a
conservative radius of influence of 20 feet is established for LA10-SVE07-1R. This data
is illustrated in Figures 13a, 13b, 13c, 13d, 13e, and 14.

3.6 Radius of Influence – LA10-OW07-3, LA10-OW07-4, LA10-OW07-7

The vacuum radius of influence could not be determined for these tests conducted in the
loess lithology. This is due to the lack of vacuum pressure in observation wells. During
the stepped rate test conducted on LA10-OW07-4 and the continuous run test
conducted on LA10-OW07-7, vacuum pressure was recorded in observation well LA10-
OW07-3. However, the radius of influence were not calculated based on data from only
one observation well.

3.7 Pore Volume Exchange

The radius of influence at extraction well LA10-SVE07-1R was conservatively

determined to be 20 feet in the fine sandy lithology. Assuming the fine sandy layer has a
15 foot vertical extent and a porosity of 30%, the pore volume can be calculated as
5,652 feet3. Using the established pore volume of 5,652 feet3 for the extraction well
LA10-SVE07-1R and the flow rates observed during the pilot testing, estimated pore
volume extraction can be calculated for each stepped rate and the continuous test.

Calculations for pore volume exchange are included in Table 9.

4.0 CONCLUSIONS

4.1 Pilot Test

Pilot test activities were performed to determine if soil vapor extraction would be an
effective means of soil remediation at the Atlas Missile Site 10. The determination is
based on the consistent radius of influence in observation wells, and extraction flow
rates within a range that is capable of removing VOCs and the pore space volumes
necessary to remediate impacted soil at the site in the designated amount of time.

The stepped rate test conducted on LA10-SVE07-1R generated data that developed the
induced vacuum radius of influence, flow rates, and VOC extraction rate for varying
levels of vacuum. Using the data from the stepped test, KEMRON concluded to run the
continuous test at 10 inHg. The continuous test confirmed flow rates, pore volume
exchange rates, average VOC extraction rates, and radius of influence for full-scale
system design. The results of the continuous run test support the ability to extract
sufficient pore volumes and VOCs from the fine sandy lithology, which begins at
approximately 40 feet bgs.

Several additional tests were conducted to isolate the induced vacuum on the loess
lithology. However, both the stepped rate tests performed on LA10-OW07-3 and LA10-
OW07-4 were largely inconclusive. This is due to lack of detected differential pressure
in observation wells. There was an exception where significant vacuum influence was
observed in well LA10-OW07-3 during the test conducted on LA10-OW07-4 located 9.35
feet away. A minimal VOC extraction rate was observed during the test conducted at
LA10-OW07-4, though a relatively elevated rate was observed during the test conducted
at LA10-OW07-3. Another stepped rate test conducted on LA10-OW07-7 demonstrated
that the radius of vacuum influence could range as far as 8.42 feet within the loess
lithology. However, the radius was not replicated during the continuous run test. Both
the stepped and continuous tests on this well, screened in the loess exhibited flow rates
and pore volume exchange rates similar to the tests on the fine sand lithology, however
the VOC extraction rate was unusual. Throughout the stepped rate test VOC
concentrations were steadily recorded, and even some of the higher concentrations for
all the tests, yet during the continuous test VOC extraction was no detected or minimal.
These tests which isolated the loess demonstrate that pathways exist in the subsurface
and could be the result of macropores, fractures, or heterogeneous soil. Deviations in
typical loess lithology were likely created when the area was excavated and then
backfilled. The existence of these preferential pathways may enhance flow rates and
pore volume exchange. Conversely, these pathways did not prove to increase VOC
extraction from the loess.

4.2 Conceptual System Design Using SVE Technology

The focus of the conceptual full-scale SVE system will be concentrated on remediating
the fine sandy lithology, not only because a majority of the TCE contamination is found
there, but this type of lithology would be better suited for this manner of remediation.
Due to the inconsistency of VOC extraction in the loess lithology and the low
concentrations of TCE, a cap could be placed over the impacted areas of loess. This
cap, designed with impermeable geosynthetic liner material, would act as a barrier
above the loess. The purpose of the cap would be to limit the amount of water infiltration
and prevent further transport of contaminants.

Based on the results of the stepped rate and continuous SVE pilot tests, a full scale
system operating at 10 to 12 inHg would be capable of extracting the total mass of TCE
contaminates in soil. The conceptual system has a design of 40 staggered extraction
wells, screened from 40 to 55 feet bgs. Staggering the extraction wells will create
overlap in the respective radius of influence. This will increase the total pore volume
exchange and VOC extraction rate. Based on the extraction time and mass
concentration removal, KEMRON recommends operating a system for one-year at 12
inHg. Conceptual designs for a full-scale system are illustrated in Figures 15 and 16.

Flow Rate Calculation

Flow Rates were converted into standard cubic feet per minute (scfm) from acfm (the
measurements taken in the field). Ambient air is introduced into the system via the bleed air
port on the extraction wellhead. This addition of air is subtracted out of the flow rate equation,
therefore the flow rates calculated for the test are measurements of the air flow from the
subsurface. Flow rates are based on the calculation that follows:

FlowRate ( scfm) = (Pitot (acfm) − Bleedair (acfm) ) * (Tstd / Tact + 460 ) * (Pact * 0.492 / Pstd )

When:
Pitot = Pitot flow (acfm) from datasheets
Bleedair = from datasheets
Tstd = 528o R or 68o F
Tact = Temperature from datasheets (oF)
Pact = Pitot vacuum (inHg) from datasheets
Pstd = 14.7 Psia

Pore Volume Calculation

Based on the results of the 1999 through 2005 and the 2006 Soil Investigation, an approximate
volume of TCE in soil can be calculated. This volume is the TCE is based on the 22,594 square
foot surface area, illustrated in Figure 3. Considering that a majority of TCE contamination is
located within the fine sandy layer, a vertical extent of 15 feet and a porosity of 30% was used
to calculate a total pore volume space of 237,237 cubic feet (ft3) for the soil with TCE
concentrations above the NDEQ remediation goal of 57 μg/kg. While this calculation produces
the total pore volume of TCE contamination in soil, the pore volumes for individual extraction
wells can also be determined based on radius of influence and screened intervals.

Total Mass Calculations

According to the 2006 RI/FS Addendum the total mass concentrations for TCE in soil at the
subject site is 5.8 Kg or 12.8 lbs. The calculations for this estimate are included as Table 10.
