The Maldevies

Case study
• Republic of Maldives, is a small island
nation in South Asia, located in the Arabian
Sea of the Indian Ocean. It lies southwest
of Sri Lanka and India, about 1,000
kilometres (620 mi) from the Asian
continent. The Maldives consists of 1,192
coral islands grouped in a double chain of
26 atolls, that stretch along a length of 871
kilometers north-south direction, spread
over roughly 90,000 square kilometres
(35,000 sq mi), only 298 square kilometers
of that is dry land, making this one of the
world's most dispersed countries
Maldives climate
• The Maldives has a tropical monsoon climate (Am) under the Köppen
climate classification, which is affected by the large landmass of South
Asia to the north. Because the Maldives has the lowest elevation of any
country in the world, the temperature is constantly hot and often
humid. The presence of this landmass causes differential heating of land
and water. These factors set off a rush of moisture-rich air from the
Indian Ocean over South Asia, resulting in the southwest monsoon. Two
seasons dominate Maldives' weather: the dry season associated with
the winter northeastern monsoon and the rainy season associated with
the southwest monsoon which brings strong winds and storms

Kudadoo Maldives Private Island
• At Kudadoo, a private coral island that
opened in December, 15 Zen-style villas
circle the island’s periphery like a diadem,
providing uninterrupted views of the
Arabian Sea’s horizon. Dining, spa visits,
and other activities happen in the solar-
powered resort nerve center area known as
The Retreat. And Kudadoo has another
impressive quality: It is the first fully
sustainable resort in the Maldives, a region
blessed with months of continuous
sunshine.

• Exteriors were crafted out of cedar wood,
which “
• particularly in a saline climate
• , adding that the oil built into the wood
gives it an elegant silver-gray tone over
time. (Since the Maldives has scarce
building materials and resources, the
cedar wood was imported from New
Zealand.) The roof of the retreat is
pitched at an angle to allow rainwater to
slide, and each solar panel is built into
the design instead of being an
afterthought. He is most proud of the
way he designed the interiors of the airy
3,000-square-foot villas: The natural
breezes sweep through them, making air-
conditioning superfluous.
Kudadoo Maldives Private Island
• The resort features 15 villas, each
with almost a thousand solar panels
which generate 300kW of electricity
— enough to power the three-
hectare island retreat. It’s designed
by Yuji Yamazaki Architecture and
has been recognised as one of
Architectural Digest’s Hottest
Designed Hotels in 2019.

• Traditionally, solar panels are hidden
in discreet areas in the Maldives and
it does not have any other function,
but in Kudadoo, the photovoltaic roof
is decidedly visible and becomes the
icon of the place.

Rangali Island,
• YYA(Yuji Yamazaki Arc.) has been
commissioned to design The Muraka
villa at Conrad Maldives, which
consists of 700 sq.m. of overwater
suite, and 100 sq.m. of underwater
suite. The interior design of the
underwater suite and entire
overwater suite to be designed by
YYA in association with local executive
architect Ahmed Saleem.
The Muraka Conrad Maldives
Rangali Island,
• “It is certainly a design of a theater.”
• . "People don’t go to a theater to see
the theater, they are there for the
show. We had to make sure that the
guests can have the underwater views
from every vantage point of the room .”
YYA said.

Rangali Island,

• More than 75% of wall, ceiling

surfaces are made of clear acrylic.
The glare and reflection on clear
acrylic had to be minimized and
views to the ocean had to be
secured. “We also wanted to give a
sense of confort. We looked at
many interior design from private
jet to classic Italian luxury cars,
from which we learned about good
details in confined spaces.” Yuji

The Raffles Maldives Meradhoo

• Enveloped in the pristine

sanctuary of the Gaafu Alifu
Atoll, the 38-villa resort is a
destination in its own right,
masterfully planned to cater to
discerning travellers in pursuit
of a luxurious and meaningful
escape.

• Commissioned for the

architecture and interior design
renovation of the property, BLINK
envisioned an oasis of laidback
luxury. To deliver an exquisite
balance between long-standing
traditions and a unique design
sensibility, BLINK selected colours
associated with Raffles and
motifs influenced by the island. A
nod to Raffles’ distinct colonial
style, striped monsoon blinds and
louvered doors and windows, all
in a signature grey-blue shade,
punctuate public and private
spaces.

• Emphasising the spectacular

scenery of the atoll, pathways that
connect various public spaces are
built overwater. In the footpath
towards Raffles Spa, lounge areas
are appointed with handcrafted
dark rattan outdoor seating and
birch wood accent tables; a coral
motif enlivens sand-coloured
upholstery. Inside, the eye is
immediately drawn upward to the
intricately fashioned white
bamboo ceiling, which anchors
the space and serves as a
dramatic decorative element.
