SUGAR CANE

I am from Chiclayo. When I was a kid and lived there, once my family and
me went to Chongoyape where my mom born. During the trip I asked to
my mom about a sweet smell that was in the air. She said that the smell
was coming from the sugar produced in several towns around there.

Sugar is produced from sugar cane, a plant that produces sucrose and
grows on the coast of Peru, Sucrose is a disaccharide formed by glucose
and fructose.

Peru has produced sugar cane since the sixteenth century. The sugar cane
is cultivated in 5 departments: Lima, Ancash, La libertad, Lambayeque and
Arequipa. The most productive city is La Libertad with “casa grande”
company. Lambayque is the second producing zone of sugar cane with
Tuman company.

The steps of the sugar manufacturing process are transportation of the

sugar cane, Grinding, Clarification, Evaporation, Crystallization, Separation
or centrifugation, Refining and Drying.

Sugar production has always been basic, essential and necessary in the
diet and It constitutes the raw material for certain industries like
confectionery, bakeries, soft drink and alcoholic beverages.

We shouldn´t consume more than 30 grams of sugar per day. It is

equivalent to 6 teaspoons daily.

I like desserts and my favorite is the popular arroz con leche (nombres
propios no se traducen). I prefer sweet food and soft drinks but I know
these are dangerous for health because they cause overweight, obesity
diabetes and others diseases.
So it´s important we don´t consume lot of sugar in our diet.
