EDGE COMPUTING

BY
BEERAPPA R NAIK
INTRODUCTION
• Edge computing enables data to be analyzed, processed, and
transferred at the edge of a network
• It allows for quicker data processing and content delivery
CLOUD V/S EDGE COMPUTING

• The basic difference b/w edge computing and cloud computing lies in
where the data processing takes place
• IOT systems perform all of their computations in the cloud using data
centers
• Edge computing manages the massive amounts of data generated by
IOT devices through storing and processing data locally
• In edge computing, massive amounts of data generated by IOT devices
are stored and processed locally
WHY?
• Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet provide cloud computing infrastructure to
major corporate and governments
• Use of IOT has increased
• They want to leverage 5G wireless technology and AI to enable faster
response times, lower latency and simplified maintenance in computing
• This is where edge computing comes in
• By 2025, companies will generate and process more than 75% of their data
outside of traditional centralized data centers
• Global edge computing market is forecasted to reach more than $8 billion
by 2025 at the growth rate of 32%
BENEFITS

• Protection against a catastrophic attack

• More resilient
• Quick
• Future technology enabled
• Localised solution
• Data efficient
CHALLENGES

• Physical security of the devices

• Micro data centers deployed by telecommunication companies in some
cases
• Organizations will be challenged to understand, track and monitor what
data they have and where, what protections are required at the various
points
FUTURE

• Experts believe the true potential of edge computing will become

apparent when 5G networks go mainstream in a year from now
• Users will be able to enjoy consistent connectivity without even realizing
it
• NVIDIA, has just announced its EGX edge computing platform
