Society of Professional Journalists Detroit announces Excellence in Journalism winners

DETROIT – More than 240 awards are being distributed to Metro Detroit’s best journalists who are
being announced today as winners in the 2020 SPJ Detroit “Excellence in Journalism” competition.

The group joins a spectacular collection of awardees, including Robert Snell of The Detroit News, who
was earlier cited as the region’s “Journalist of the Year.”

The complete list of winners is being provided in this announcement instead of the usual unveiling at
the SPJ Detroit annual spring banquet, which was canceled after growing concerns over the COVID-
19 pandemic.

The annual competition honors the best journalism spanning all mediums including print, radio,
television and digital in Southeastern Michigan.

“SPJ Detroit congratulates the winners and finalists this year and we are so sorry that we can’t hold
our annual fest to meet and celebrate each of you personally and with our many peers,” said Beth
Konrad, the Detroit chapter president and a professor of practice at Wayne State University.

“We hold each of you in the highest esteem,” she added.

The winners, by contest category and medium, are listed below.

All awards will be distributed through the winners’ media organizations and employers or directly from
SPJ Detroit.

SPJ had planned to hold its annual awards banquet in May at the San Marino in Troy but announced
in March that the banquet would be postponed until 2021.

"SPJ Detroit was saddened by the necessary cancellation of this year's banquet but minimizing the
dangers of this virus was foremost in our decision,” Konrad said.

Today’s release is the final step in the completion of the 2020 Excellence in Journalism competition
for SPJ Detroit.

In April, SPJ Detroit announced the recipients of the following awards:

Lifetime Achievement
• David Ashenfelter, Public Information Officer – U.S. District Court, Detroit
• Mary Kramer, Vice President & Group Publisher – Crain Communications Inc.
• Vickie Thomas, City and Beat reporter — WWJ Newsradio 950

Young Journalists of the Year

• Violet Ikonomova, Deadline Detroit
• Riley Beggin, Bridge Magazine

Larry Lauraine Scholarships

• Sylvia Jarrus, Michigan State University ($2500)
• Jessica Taylor, Wayne State University ($1500)
• Zoe Jackson, Western Michigan University ($1000)
• Wolfgang Ruth, Michigan State University ($500)

(The Lifetime Achievement awardees will be honored at the spring 2021 “Excellence in Journalism”
banquet.)

SPJ Detroit is asking that all awardees provide photos of themselves (.jpg portraits preferred) for its
archives. The awards will be sent to the sponsoring organizations, and SPJ is prepared to send
awards to individuals not directly affiliated with a news organization.

Questions should be directed to Marcia Hart, SPJ Detroit administrator, at spjdetroit@gmail.com.

Award winners are listed on the following pages.
