INTRODUCTION
Sri Karpagam spinning mills is basically yarn manufacturing textile mill. The
systems that they use in their factory are
 Production
 Quality control System
 HRIS
 Inventory
 Accounts
As it is a medium scale manufacturing industry, still manual records is given
more importance for maintaining information. But now many sections are being
computerised for effective and efficient processing.

QUALITY CONTROL SYSTEM:

In textile industry raw material and the most dominant factor as it
contributes 50-75% in total manufacturing cost. In quality conscious scenario,
quality of raw material plays a vital role. But the quality of raw material is
decided by measuring its properties. Now measurement through conventional
techniques is very laborious, time consuming.
Therefore some processes have been computerised using new
technologies to monitor the quality of the raw material and yarn.
 UT3 Analyser.
 Yarn testing equipment.
 Yarn strength tester
 Advance Fibre Information System

UT3 Analyser:
It is used to check the quality of the product in every step of the yarn
manufacturing process.
It uses two parameters to measure the quality:
 U% - % Utility
 No of imperfections
It is mainly used in Carding, Draw frame and Simplex processes.
Carding – Cleaning and straightening of fibres.
Draw Frame – Parallelisation of fibres.
Simplex – Draw down to rove.

Yarn Testing Equipment

It is used to check the quality of the final product (yarn) i.e. from 1Kg of
cotton how much percentage is utilized to produce the yarn. Based on the usage
of yarn the percentage is changed. Lower the percentage, higher the quality.
Rap reel and Rap block are used.

Yarn strength tester

The strength of the yarn is calculated manually by using the formula
Strength = Count * Pound
The count of the yarn is calculated using AFIS system described in the
next section.

Advance Fibre Information System:

AFIS provides basic single fibre information and is distinguished from
earlier and existing methods by providing distributions of the basic fibre
properties. These distribution measurements provide more accurate, precise and
basic information about fibre. It is used for raw material testing.
The parameters that are considered are:
 2.5 span length
 50% span length
 Micro Naire Value
 Strength of the Fibre
A fibre sample is introduced into the system and is processed through a
fibre individualizer, which aeromechanically separates the sample into three
components consisting of cleaned fibre, microdust and trash. Each of these
components is transported in a separate pneumatic path and may be analysed
electro-optically or by other means. The data processing and reporting are
handled by an industrialized PC.

ADVANTAGES:
1. High degree of accuracy, which gives precise results.
2. Testing speed is high.
3. It avoids laborious time work needed for measurement of count.
4. The results are free from human and machine error.
5. It can analyze process performance.

Trash analyzer:-
It is an application of AFIS, by which we come to know the exact amount
of trash present in material so that we can decide the material is suitable for
processing or not. It also separates the dust content from the raw materials. This
is very efficient and accurate in separating the dust content from the raw
materials

DECISIONS TAKEN USING THE QUALITY CONTROL SYSTEM:

Quality control system is used for making critical decisions like:
a. Changing the speed of the machine.
b. Alter the settings of the machinery.
c. Alter the TPI (Twist Per Inch)
d. Reducing the waste percentage

HUMAN RESOURCE INFORMATION SYSTEM:

Primary details about the employees are stored in database. And it is
updated every six months. The new employees are given training for an initial
three months. Their performance during this period is also recorded. These
records are used to check if their performances match the specific targets set by
the organisation to categorize them as skilled labours. Daily wages, salary,
number of days of work, quantity produced per day etc are also stored in the
database.
For maintaining the attendance, initially manual records were used. Then
they computerised this process by using finger print reader. But this system was
a failure since the system was not designed properly to their satisfaction. Hence
the system was removed and maintained manually using “Time cards” which is
later added to the database.

INVENTORY:
This system is used to record material inward and produce the receipt.
Check the availability of stocks. It is also used to find out the amount of
finished goods produced per day, per month and per year.

PROPOSAL:
QUALITY CONTROL SYSTEM:
AFIS can also be used in other applications like:

Card nep analysis:-

Neps are created by mechanical handling and cleaning of cotton fibres. Due to
fibre individualizer provided inside the machine we can analyze neps hence we
can check nep in carded or combed sliver

Card wire maintenance analysis:-

We can judge the grinding frequency required for card wires by appropriate
checking of sliver quality on AFIS instrument

Length analysis of comber to DIF:-

This instrument provides the data on histogram i.e. in form of fibre distribution
so it will give accurate idea about length.

HUMAN RESOURCE INFORMATION SYSTEM:

For maintaining attendance, they can debug the previous version by
improving the speed and accuracy of matching the finger prints which
automatically prevents the system getting hanged.
They can also provide ID card to every employee with bar codes that are
easy to be recognised and recorded to the system. This simplifies the process of
retrieving the employee details and updating the database.

INVENTORY:
To the existing system, several new features can be added. A minimum
limit is set for the stock or raw materials for the production of the yarn. An
alarm is used to notify whenever stock level goes below the minimum limit. The
alarm can be given in the form of message or memo.
