Konnichiwa, Watashi wa (Name) des. Nihon e Yokoso.
Good afternoon! My name is Emily. Welcome to Japan! (say relation to culture ex: I have been to Japan twice and plan to return in April, host families…) (Shows map) Does anyone know where Japan is? (Pictures) Japan is a country made up of over 6,000 islands in the pacific ocean. Most of the land in Japan is forests or mountains. The capital is Tokyo which is also where the 2020 Olympics will be held. Another city in Japan, is Virginia Beach’s sister city, Miyazaki which is also a beach town, much like this one. Japan is known for its advanced technology, unique food, and traditions. In Japan, people use chopsticks instead of forks to eat food most of the time.
See picture for how to hold chopsticks
Students practice with chopsticks, put students into teams
Activity- Materials- paper plates, beads, cubes, wooden chopsticks Instructions- put all of the beads and cubes on the paper plate marked go. When I say go, the first person will pick up an item with the chopsticks and place it on the next person’s plate. This keeps going until all of the items are placed on the last plate marked finish. The first team to finish wins. Additional rules- Medium- You cannot scoot items with chopsticks (Explain how it isn’t respectful) Challenge- You cannot cross your chopsticks (Explain how it isn’t respectful in Japanese culture)
