Essential Question: What harms do dogs go through?

Three Points to Prove: #1: People eat dogs.

#2: Dogs are a delicacy in Vietnam.
#3:Some people oppose eating dogs.

Point that this Source Proves: #

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

Early in the article the municipal slaughterhouse inspector casually estimated that half the dogs served at
those restaurants were stolen from homes.

Everyone on the road toward the sea blamed the long epidemic of dog rustling on the heroin addicts in the
next village.

Vietnam may be a police state, but it’s the kind of police state where the cops can’t prevent dog rustling

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

The article talks about how dogs are taken from their home and used as a delicacy in Vietnam. It talks
about the story of a heroin addict and how he tried to steal a dog to sell for drugs. He was caught in the act
and a group of men killed him and burned him. This shows the differences people in Vietnam have on this
topic. Many dogs are taken from homes nearby and cooked in the kitchens in the cities. Eating dog is a
regular thing in Vietnam and it slowly became a delicacy in the country.
People with the heroin addicts is a big thing in Vietnam and is one of the leading factors in the
purchase of dogs. Many homes in Vietnam are ripped apart because someone usually becomes dangerously
addicted to the drug and resort to any means necessary to get the drug. Dog rustling or kidnapping as proven
to be increasing since 2016, because acquiring and selling dogs have become quite easy in Vietnam.
Vietnam can’t really enforce many laws against dog rustling because it is such a common thing and it
is hard to convict people of it. Many people that oppose dog rustling take matters in their own hands and
become vigilantes. They punish crimes however they see fit and that usually means by executing the dog
rustler.

Essential Question: How do people cope with dogs with depression?

Three Points to Prove: #1: They give them medication.

#2: They realize the symptoms ahead of time.
#3: Examples of the mental illness

Point that this Source Proves: #

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

Early in the video, “He had such paralyzing separation anxiety that we couldn't leave him alone. Once, he
jumped out of our third floor apartment. He ate fabric. He ate things, recyclables. He hunted flies that didn't
exist. He suffered from hallucinations. He was diagnosed with a canine compulsive disorder and that's really just
the tip of the iceberg. “

Some examples of mental illness would be: “the territory of mental illness when you do things
like compulsively over-wash your hands or paws, or you develop a ritual that's so extreme that you can't sit down to
a bowl of food unless you engage in that ritual. “

Some doctors give their animals medication for example: SeaWorld gives mother orcas antianxiety
medications when their calves are taken away. Many zoo gorillas have been given antipsychotics and antianxiety
medications. But dogs like my own Oliver are given antidepressants and some antianxiety medications to keep
them from jumping out of buildings or jumping into traffic.

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

When the authors dog had to move places the owners began to realize how he was showing
paralyzing separation anxiety symptoms because the change in habit and routine. The dogs will exert bad
behaviors such as eating things out of the normal, hallucinations, and jumping at high heights. That’s when
they realized the problem and took them to the vet. That is where they diagnosed him with canine
compulsive disorder which means a mental health disorder characterized by the excessive performance of
repetitive behaviors that don't serve any apparent purpose.
If you see your animal doing repetitive things that are out of the normal you should take your dog to
the doctor. It will show symptoms of the dog having a mental disability because it does thing out of its
routine. Dogs especially need to stay in routine because when it changes all of a sudden it can make the dog
anxious. You must engage the dogs and reward it when trying new things so it will become accustomed to
the new routine.
The doctors will provide the same medication for humans for animals. They react the same way
humans do. They do this to help keep the animals in check because they need to be relaxed. They do this for
the safety of the dogs and animals that are prescribed to it.

Essential Question: How college students can benefit from dogs

Three Points to Prove: #1: They decrease depression

#2: They make areas happier in general
#3: they decrease suicides in college

Point that this Source Proves: #

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

According to the article, about 79,331 students nationwide have attended at least on counseling appointment.

The college board said that: many college students suffer from homesickness and the use of therapy dogs
has become more popular since 2005.

Some of the results showed that the intervention was successful in decreasing homesickness and increasing
satisfaction with life.

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

College proved to be a very difficult time for students especially freshman. They have difficulty
functioning while away from their friends and family. About 57 % or the students suffer from anxiety, 47%
were from stress, and 46% were suffering from depression. According to the Center for Collegiate Mental
Health having animals with the students for a couple hours a week proved to help make the students happier.
The need for mental health services for college students has greatly increased and it's up to the
college to help work with them. Most colleges started offering counseling services for little to no charge to
the students. The colleges know the depression can affect the students academic success. They also started
more mental health literacy classes so they can fully understand what the are being diagnosed with.
The impact of therapy pets have been well documented. There have been many presentations about
the benefits of pet therapy and how interacting with therapy dogs can help. A lot of the students said that
they missed the animals they had back at home so interacting with one now greatly helped. Many studies
show the presence of a therapy dog lessens depression by at least 30 %.

Essential Question: How dogs can help with depression

Three Points to Prove: #1: They improve socialization skills

#2: They help improve exercise
#3:They can help with self esteem.

Point that this Source Proves: #

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

According to the article: Exercise increases endorphins, which fight depression. Because dogs need
consistency, you’ll learn how to make exercise a daily routine instead of a once-in-a-while activity.

Dogs give you a reason to talk to new people while on walks or at the dog park, which can alleviate the
loneliness you might feel in a depressive episode.

Researchers say that: taking care of a dog offers reassurance that you can care for another creature and for
yourself.

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

Dogs can help stimulate the senses of their owner because dogs need a consistent routine. When they
have a consistent routine that requires the owner to build a routine themselves. Endorphins are a group of
hormones secreted within the brain and nervous system and having a number of physiological functions.
Endorphins are the hormones that make you happy which leads to less depression in the owners.
Having a dog can increase the need of exercise with the owner and pet. Going out and doing
exercises can help “alleviate” the loneliness the owner may feel. Having a dog can help maintain or lose
weight and it can help with the owners cardio. When people workout they can get the tough things out of
their mind.
Researchers say that you can build self-esteem by taking ownership of the dog. It also offers
reassurance that you can care for an animal and yourself. It also teaches you how to apply new skills in their
everyday lives. Playing with animals can elevate the serotonin and dopamine which can help the mind relax.
Pet owners over the age of 65 make 30 percent fewer visits to the doctors than those without pets.

Essential Question: How does the dog create an attachment to their owners?

Three Points to Prove: #1: Meaning of the dogs existence

#2: How dogs are with us through good and bad.
#3: Always there for you

Point that this Source Proves: #

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

“My purpose, my whole life, had been to love him and be with him, to make him happy. I didn’t want to
cause any unhappiness now—in that way, I decided it was probably better than he wasn’t here to see this,
though I missed him so much at that moment the ache of it was as bad as the strange pains in my belly.”

During the movie it said that: Dogs have important jobs, like barking when the doorbell rings, but cats have
no function in a house whatsoever.”

“All I could do now was offer him comfort, the assurance that as he left this life he was not alone but rather
was tended by the dog who loved him more than anything in the whole world.”

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

This website provides reliable information that supports people can really grow in their relationships
with their pets. There are many movies, articles as well as stories that prove that animals can play a very
significant role in a human’s life. In the movie A dog’s purpose, the main character expresses his gratitude
and love for his animal when he said, ““My purpose, my whole life, had been to love him and be with him,
to make him happy. I didn’t want to cause any unhappiness now—in that way, I decided it was probably
better than he wasn’t here to see this, though I missed him so much at that moment the ache of it was as bad
as the strange pains in my belly.”  This specific excerpt is a prime example of how animals can develop a
very close-knit relationship with the people they are around.
Many people argue that dogs are better than cats. People believe that, not only are dogs amazing and
adorable companions to keep around, but they also serve a purpose to many of their owners. In this movie,
the characters stated that Dogs have important jobs, like barking when the doorbell rings, but cats have no
function in a house whatsoever. This shows that the people in this movie were more affectionate towards
dogs rather than cats. However, this also is a valid point that shows the benefits that come with having a dog.
Dog’s are actually very intelligent animals that have feeling just like us humans. Dogs find stability in
comforting their human companions as well as being able to help around the house.
This movie is a very emotional yet accurate representation of how emotional it may be for human’s
as well as dogs to depart one another. In this movie, one very important character unfortunately dies. This
quote states “All I could do now was offer him comfort, the assurance that as he left this life he was not
alone but rather was tended by the dog who loved him more than anything in the whole world.” Which was
said by another important character in the story line. This provides information on an emotional basis that
draws the watcher into the story line and helps people understand the importance of a dog to their owner.
